if a dog of mine has been dstroying my lawn time aftertime should i get him put down or let him run away?

he is an old dog..he gets walked and fed and has toys and all that crap

I've got one that does that. I've thought of letting him run away but not of getting him put down. What it comes down to though, is that I love him. I'd prefer to have a few holes in my yard then to part with him
