I am in relatively good health, but I'm OLD and skeptical about elective surgery to prevent a possible future illness. How would you advise your Grandmother?

As long as you are in good health I would recomend to have your gall bladder removed so you could at least be comfortable. I work in the medical field and assist on gall bladder surgeries. Most of the time they are all done laprascopically and you are in and out in the same day. Quick, easy and simple.. And saves you alot of pain and hassle. Talk to your dr. about it

Hello Frannie sorry your suffering this terrible pain but unfortunately after my gallbladder was removed 13yrs ago i'm still having chronic pancreatitis. This doesn't mean you'll have the same problem infact most people after having this done never have any more pain and they say it's been the best thing, so good luck and hope you get the help you need.

Having your gallbladder out is not very major if it is done by endoscopy (small instruments inserted through abdominal wall and guided by telescopic view). Can even be out of hospital same day. You don't want the problems that can occur with repeated pancreatitis, believe me!

PS 77 isn't old.

If the elective surgery in question is cholecystectomy, it is a relatively minor surgery nowadays. It is an outpatient procedure with minimal scarring. If your gallbladder is giving you problems, I would recommend you listen to medical advice and have it removed. Chances are, it is going to cause you unnecessary problems in the future.
