how long does it take before one receives a visa number from a relative with US permanent residency?

well my dad applied fro me and its taken me know about 5years today and i still have not received any thing just letters saying i have been approved but my lawyer said about 1 more yr should do it so about 6 yrs

Apply for a US visa and it is the only time that you will know the number of your visa if granted.
