i'm normally super-vigilant about not eating stuff that has the remotest chance of being spoiled, but tonight i put a bit of soymilk in my mashed potatoes without thinking about it and sniffed it later on and it was really fishy - bacteria smelling. the container hadn't expanded so i didn't have that tipoff. i probably ate no more than 2-3 tablespoons of the stuff in total. i'm wondering

1)if there is anything i can do to avoid getting horribly sick
2)if it's likely that i'm going to get horribly sick
3) what kind of horribly sick i can expect (i.e. what kind of bacteria would live in soymilk and what horrors can i expect it to do?)

I wouldn't worry about it so much since you probably bought the soy milk from a reputable manufacturer and I'm assuming you or anyone else wasn't drinking from the bottle. Most regular milk and soy milk should be consumed within 7 days of opening regardless of what the expiration date says if stored under proper conditions. The worst that could happen is nausea and diarrhea which should subside in a day or two if it ever happens. If it persists then you should seek medical attention.

If you get food poisoning, you can expect explosive diarrhea and vomiting. And you might have to go to the hosp for fluids if you get too dehydrated. But I have had it and had no immune system at the time and no colon (Crohn's disease and surgeries) and the worst that happened to me is needing more fluids and I was already on an IV so they just increased the flow and then I took some phenergan for the nausea. But I didn't have to go to the hospital, I continued to stay at home. And it didn't last but a few days for me.

My mom had it at the same time and she has always been healthy and she just had the poops and that was it and she was over it in a day.

By the way, our source, rancid butter on popcorn at a carnival I just had to go to. Dragged my IV and all just to try some cotton candy and popcorn, after not eating anything, not even ice chips for 4 months. Whatta dope I was.

With that small an amount the risk is low-it probably won't be too bad even if you do get sick. The bacteria produce a toxin that causes the symptoms, so there's not much you can do-buy some Immodium and Pepto-Bismol.

Taking some antibiotics would help....since all food poisoning is bacterial ...usually...you can get viral types of food poisoning..or so i've heard..
