When you know it is coming, you can prepare for it mentally. If you do not read the tea leaves, it can really depress you.

I worked for a company that laid off the management after a merger. We were doing great and the manager was bringing in tons of work. After he left, sales dropped to zero.

They brought in a new guy that was smarter than anybody I had ever worked for, but the guy couldn't sell Ice water in a drought in the desert.

I figured he had 3 months.

3 months passed and he was not fired, so me and the rest of my peers took a breath and were relieved.

Well, a few weeks later, we were restructured and our manager was given a new mission from our new manager from the closest corporate office about 4 hours away.

We learned that most layoffs occurred on the 1st Friday of the month in our company.

So, a couple of more months pass, the boss was still planning on how to increase sales (without making sales calls).

It was Friday, we all wore black - to show solidarity with the people destined to get cut. We called the boss in the corporate office to find out he was out of the office (we thought we were in the clear, but he was on his way to our place).

He shows up around 9 and starts to call us into his office.

Jim was 1st, and by 9:15 he was let go. Jim had gotten married about 2 months earlier and purchased his first house.
But, Jim was ready for it (he had been doing nothing for 6 weeks straight). He was actually relieved to be fired because it meant that he could look for another job without having to worry about being caught. He was laughing about it that afternoon.

He called in a secretary, she laughed too.

But the boss got called in. 3 hours later, he came out red-eyed, teary and sad. He was not expecting it.

I figured it was my turn too, but I never got the call.

I took Jim and the secretary to lunch and we had a big laugh about how much our company sucked.

It was funny, and that is how we dealt with it.

Now, my (former) boss caught me working the next day and went over every detail of what was said. He was there cleaning out his office, I was there catching up on reports.

His eyes were still red from staying up crying the whole night before.

I really wanted to slap him because it was his own fault for planning the work, and not working the plan.

He ultimately got another job with another company. They all did.

I left about 2 months later on my own accord before they could fire me (I was very insuborndinate and deserved firing).

It totally depends on the situation. Sometimes you are trap for no reason and if that is a case then no worries, World is open for u. If you are right and fired for some politics then you don't have to feel guilty about it the company is in a loss not you.

it feels horrible I think unless you truly enjoy your job and it was your dream career the main reason that being fired hurts is not because the job itself it's because it hurts the person ego. I was fired about 6 weeks ago and i absolutely hated my job when they fired me i almost cried not because the job but because my ego was hurt.

I got fired once and I went home and locked myself in my room and I cried my eyes out. They used and abused me then threw me away like I was garbage. very insulting
