If your wife has ever asked "does my *** look fat in this" you know lying is acceptable from time to time, unless you like sleeping on the couch.

Here is a tale from Hinduism.A saint was meditating in a forest when a deer rushed past him at a great speed. He opened his eyes, wondered for a moment and went back in to meditation. After a while,a King came with his soldiers and asked the saint whether he saw a deer and if so,in which direction it went.Saint knew that they were hunting and also that his true reply shall cause death to an innocent creature and a false one can save it's life.He did what he had to and that saved the life of the deer.Take your own pick about righteousness of truth and lies.

No.
(John 8:44) YOU are from YOUR father the Devil, and YOU wish to do the desires of YOUR father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is a liar and the father of [the lie].
(Romans 3:7-8) Yet if by reason of my lie the truth of God has been made more prominent to his glory, why am I also yet being judged as a sinner? 8 And [why] not [say], just as it is falsely charged to us and just as some men state that we say: “Let us do the bad things that the good things may come”? The judgment against those [men] is in harmony with justice.
Good things cannot come from bad.

Yes, there are times it is ok to lie.If you were in a life threatening situation, or one where someone else could get hurt, you can lie to protect them. One example would have been for those who hid the Jews in Nazi Germany. When the Nazis came to the door asking if there were Jews in the house, many people lied to protect them. There are many times in the Bible when people lied- Rahab lied when she hid Joshua and the spies from the officials in Jericho. Because she lied to protect the men, the Israelites spared her and her family, and God even put her in the lineage for the Messiah.

A lie is like giving up on communication.
So, if you are ready to abandon that relationship... lie.
Although the "Does my *** look fat..." is ABSOLUTELY the exception. Truth their can get you castrated.

Well if the truth about your friend's new hair cut would make them hate you forever...then maybe stepping around it is ok to spare their feelings.
There are times I have said "well it's ok" to a friend about something...they then aren't sure if I'm trying to say I don't like it, when they do...but I just step around it by saying something like "no, it's ok, it's just not my style"...
I think the key is, truth, but not necessarily all of it.

In a life or death situation you need to know one thing: If I die will I go to heaven or hell? If you have repented of your sins and are living a holy life God will reward you for your honesty. Even if you lie and live you are condemning yourself to eternal damnation. Lying is sin. I'd rather have a clear conscience. It is never right to lie.

just use you gut judgement on that sort of thing, if a man was being chased by a gang of knife weilding bandits, would you tell them the truth of where the innocent man went. would you be responcible for the death of an innocent man or lie and protect him/her.

Well, if you had to lie to save your life, I would think that's acceptable, wouldn't you?
