Many reasons. The Mayan 2012 calendar, The Nostradamus prophesy of the world fighting over some blackness or a black substance and the comparison of Bush to Nostradamus' Mabus. Natural disasters compiling with the looming threat of a climate shift. Scientists dire predictions of a comet hitting the earth in the not so distant future. The biblical prophesies of Luke, Revelations, Daniel and many others. I think the strongest markers being the biblical implications combined with the terrible storms, earthquakes, floods, pestilence and disease. Brother against brother and father against son. The bible tells us that "as in the days of Noah and Sodom and Gommorah so will be the last days. Top all that with a war in the holy lands especially with the threat of a war near the Valley of Meggido when Hezbollah was fighting in Lebanon, and now the latest news of Israel thinking of dividing Jerusalem, which biblically speaking is Gods blessed and chosen city. Rebuilding the Temple Mount is probably the thing that will bring this all to a head too. If this happens look for a bloodbath to ensue the middle-east. Remember that according to the bible the time is still not come but we should prepare for it. The time for the messiah to appear will be after the antichrist takes his seat on the throne of God in the Temple Mount and will present himself to be the messiah. Even Israel will be fooled. With all that said, Jesus himself said that "no man know the hour in which I cometh." End of time predictions have been made many times over and the last generation said the same things people say now about how bad things are and the end is coming soon. The real question is "How much longer will God test mans faith?"
II Thessalonians 2:3
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Oh and PS: Its not just one religious belief. The Koran also echoes these predictions, hence a Jihad.

There was a promise by God that knowledge would increase. And God has a habit of making all His promises good.
The current gist on certain channels is that all these prophecies are tying in to each other. The current gist includes the year 2012. While I remain a bit skeptical about that year, I still cannot help seeing the events in the Middle East as becoming ripe for the Last Days.
If you read Zechariah 14:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Zechariah%2014;&version=31;
You will see how God influenced many armies to come and attack Jerusalem. That's happened before, but not in the way it is prophesied in that chapter. So far as we know, in all history God has never come down and split the mount of Olives in two, and melting the faces of Israel's enemies off. lol
So the likelihood of enemies attacking Israel seems rather possible. And the world is getting rather 'global' minded. And there are apostasies within the Christian church, and the Land of Gog (Russia) is encroaching upon the North. All these are signs that are supposed to happen in the Last Days.
So here we are!

Sheesh,look around you.Study past history and then compare it with the past 93 years.Never in history has the entire world been turned upside down.All the signs of the Last Days are here.Not only the "natural disasters" that are increasing with intensity and frequency.But also the debasing of the traditional family.A wholesale rejection of absolute truth.The forming of a One World Government and Religion.The coming of WW III as written by Occultist and Freemason Albert Pike in 1871.Biblical [Christian]prophecies describing all these things.Several other religions pointing to the End-Times being between 1999 and 2012.Galaxies and stars slamming into each other.The sun playing a magnetic funeral dirge in the past year or two.I could go on for another hour with all the signs of the times.

Probably because a lot of prophecies have already been fulfilled and also due to people's fascination with the unknown. The end times are very exiting if you are on the winning team (God's), but if you fall on the other side, Earth is the only paradise you will ever know.

Oh, you should've heard it in late 1999...the Y2K bug that was supposed to wipe out civilization was being called a sign of the apocalypse, and of course, the second coming...
Didn't happen then, ain't gonna happen now.
In the mid-80s, a few fringe believers were convinced that Ronald Reagan was the anti-Christ (see, because Ronald Wilson Reagan is 3 words each with 6 letters, making 666), and that his stand-off with Mikhail Gorbachev would lead to nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, leading to the apocalypse, and of course, the second coming...
Didn't happen then, ain't gonna happen now.

The Bible says these things must come to pass. If you haven't accepted Jesus Into your heart today.It's not too late. He loves you and will forgive you of all your sins. A fresh start. Blessings

Because people like to keep up with 'current events'. Especially when they are of this 'magnitude'.
