We'd get lunch together like every day, and he was the only nice person to me at the office, and we'd usually only IM throughout the workday. I'm 20, he's 23. I haven't talked to anyone there since my last day in August, though, but was thinking about catching up.

Is doing so through an IM weird or awkward?

No. It is nice to catch up with old friends and IM is a perfectly accepted manner of communicating nowadays, particularly for people your ages.
