Probably for the same reason they watch me when I'm cooking in the kitchen. They want to be close to people they like. :)

Trying to get your attention! My mother had a cat who would sit on the table and watch her mark exam papers. She always had a hankie with perfume on it tucked in her bra. If she actually used the hankie or placed it on the table, the cat would sniff the perfume and go absolutely beserk. We now think he would sit there waiting for the handkerchief and his perfume fix. He lived to 18years old

You're lucky if your cat just sits there. If I do any paperwork near my cat, he'll try to steal it. He does that with my medication, too, if I put it down within his reach. Cats like to be the centre of attention, and of course, they are perfectly convinced everything in the world was created especially for them.

its the inevitable. they're using the table as a base for making plans to sit on your homework. that way you have no choice but to recognize that they are cuter and softer then the homework, which is what they are concerned about.

One of mine gets on my book or gets between my face and my book. Another watches movies with me. Cats are curious.

1) Cats love people they love: my kitten will lay next to me while I go #2 in the bathroom, she'll watch me cook my ramen. She'll even intently watch me sit there and do nothing.
2) Cats are super smart creatures and are plotting to take over the world. Your cat is probably gathering more information for their master plan.
You better watch out! O_O

Cats are curious animals, and they like company. My cat is at this moment sitting on my printer eyes closed. He just wants to be near me. And who can blame him.
