It is a way the society forces you to follow from birth. For most of them the birth decides their religion. They stick to that whether they follow it or not. For people who want to analyze before following anything, religion becomes a question.
Religion and God are not required if you are honest. People will trust you. You get all recognition in society. You need a religious banner if you are not so honest, loyal and sincere in life, business and relationships.
A thief, Liar, Cheats, dishonest Politician, Black marketeer, Murderer, Smuggler, Tax evaders, terrorists all use their religion for their protection. You can make sure of a person that he is one among the above category by his seriousness in his religion.

The problem with your question is that you preface it and everything else on what "you" think. Who told you that it was all about what "you" think? First of all "thinker" a religion is simply a way of life. You should have figured that out already. It does not take rocket science to realize and understand the "EXISTENCE" is GOD personified. Can you identify an entity or anything else for that matter greater than existence? Be blessed that you have the ability to read. Otherwise you would have missed this life lesson.

Whatever is available in the world is required. Everybody doesn't feel about something identically.
When we start applying intellect about His existence or non-existence(!), we go away and away from God.
But if you are from the intellectual class, who can argue with you, but another intellectual? And then the discussion will be on other things and not on God, because God starts after the limits of intellectuality.

A religion is a spiritual guidance for people to have and believe in. A powerful being/s which inspire and guides us to a better life, future and life after death.
Why do you have to ask "What is a Religion?"
if you already decided it's not required !?
Prejudging will get you nowhere!
"Know it all" freak!

Religion for me is just a term that includes the formal and ritual following of a single belief or idea. I also do not see a need for religion. I do think there is room for god. However you chose to accept your creator is up to you. Good luck in your journey!

A religion is nothing more than a set of beliefs and values, used as a foundation of your particular way of life. And yes, it and God are not required. It is merely a tool the human species has invented to aid survival, as well as improve the quality of life.

There are a lot of atheists living and having lived happily and successfully without ever worrying about any kind of religion. So, if you don't want to worry about it yourself, go for it. At least that's what you should do in a western society, but you might not have that freedom in other ones. Be careful then.

Religion is kind of hard to define, for the most part it is just defined in a kind of "I know it when I see it" way.
Though yeah, it's not required at all (and god probably doesn't exist).
Belief in god also doesn't seem to help society at all either.

absolutely. If there was no religion we wouldn't have to believe in anything or have unreasonable argument w/ anyone or hell even war. It's just important that you have moral values. It's not important on what God you believe, hell you don't have to believe in a God! Don't get brainwashed by all these religions-their honestly just major corporations these day. San Francisco's catholicism anybody? It's all insane. The one religion that seems so free is buddhism to me. but in conclusion- just have moral values.

Religion is nothing but it created by the human. God is one. simply they wanted to separate from the society so they formed some groups and they kept a name for that group as religion.
