When you say "Economically" do you mean overall expense in ownership? Both vehicles are ample for a family of four.
Consider things like gas milage.
A 2002 Ford Explorer:15-16 MPG city,19-20MPG Highway
A 2002 Expedition:12-14 PMG city,16-19 MPG Highway
The actual gas mileage you'd get might be less.
Consider maintenance, cost of repair, the typical lifespan of each model; How much milage does it have and how much more can you expect to get out of it?
And yes, consider the implication on your insurance.
How will each of the models affect your rates?
Last but not least, consider resale value.

You could also go for a vehicle with better mileage, resale value and cheaper maintenance, if your mind is not made up on the Ford SUV's.

Something that big for a family of 4? What is wrong with you?

If you don't need to go offroad get a sedan, you'll be safer not having to worry about it rolling over if you need to make a sudden move to avoid running over a child.

either one of those are really good vehicles ,so you got two good choices their to choose from,i would drive both of them and see which one felt the best and drove the best, there's not going to be a lot of difference in either one of those, both look good and will hold up fairly well, good luck with it.

It really depends on what you're looking for and the mileage on the vehicles.
