i was just wondering if it is at all illegal to videotape or record a conversation of an officer with or without him knowing ... in public obviously

see ... i live in a city where the police search you for absolutely nothing ... we were pulled over for "looking like someone" but when we proved we werent who they thought we were they searched the car anyway .. they even asked to see a camera we had in the car .. can they do that even though we did absolutely nothing wrong?

so i started thinking that this was an infringement of my rights .. i have things to do and if i proved my innocence of anything should they have the right to hold me up for rnothing?

it's not illegal, but, you might get your *** kicked, as I have seen cops on many occasions beat the crap out of people for video taping them, they may also arrest you for "disorderly conduct" which is mostly a catch all for the cops don't like what you are doing at this moment.

Sounds like you have devised a way to get yourself seriously injured or dead.

The police stopped you for some reason, even if you were stopped totally by accident don't pull stunts on the cops. If you suddenly whip out a sliver colored or dark colored hand held object and point it at the officers; chances are real good they might mistake it for a weapon and shoot your dumb butt.

Traffic stops get a lot of cops hurt, most cops are at the high end of alert when they pull someone over. Sudden moves and stuff in your hand can result in a very sudden and violent reaction from the cop.

In Illinois you can videotape, just as you can in all 50 states and possessions or protectorates. You cannot sound record a specific conversation unless all parties agree. You need to go to Indiana to do that or get a court order.

In my 29 years as a cop, in Illinois, almost everyone I stopped to talk to or search was "doing nothing" or I stopped them for "no reason". This includes all of the people with guns and dope I stopped and all of the people I have arrested for everything from murder to disturbing the peace.

videotaping in public is completely legal in all states. sound recordings may not be. laws vary state to state. most states allow sound recordings in public. some states do not (say, florida, where recording someone's voice without their knowledge is a felony). record what you wish to, but if illinois has stricter sound recording statutes, you might consider dubbing over the voice

the answer below mine is good. that has been my experience also. few who are stopped are 'doing something.' cops can be scary, and unfortunately the system has produced a 'them against us' philosophy. it is good to get a video record, since its very easy for law enforcement to step over the line, accidentally or intentionally. but don't be intimidated - for all my experience with them on both sides, most just consider it their paycheck & another day toward retirement

Videotaping the policemen is not a crime under any law.

I'm no lawyer, but, as long as it's public video tape all you want. It's legal.
