It is unlike a simple gown, because it seems to fit snugly about the chest and abdomen. It has a long line of buttons down the front, which starts at the top of the neck, goes down over the chest and abdomen, and ends I know not where.

It is called a CASSOCK!

We all just about fell out of our chairs in Latin IV, when Father Stec opened the front of his cassock one day--with a zipper!!!

Of course, we'd always thought those buttons were operational, and it was shocking to find out that they were just for show. The buttons go all the way to the bottom, and there are pleats in the back at the waist to provide walking room.

Edit: I think the born-again lady meant BUTTONS, not buttocks!

It is called a cassock. All priests wear some form of this garment - from the ordinary parish priest to the Pope. Normally it is black, but cardinals may wear a red one. The red color of the Cardinal's cassock is called "Sacred Purple."

Cassock, sometimes called a soutane. The buttons usually end just above the hem, by the way. :)
