Certainly. I've done it. But having a broken heart is often confused with having a broken mind. Broken minds happen all the time. Sometimes we cause it ourselves. We "break" our own minds by causing literal damage to our brains (think drug damage). Or others can break them for us. But having a broken heart, a severe emotional break, like for example, taking a baby away from it's mother breaks the mothers heart and certainly, the babies. That too affects the mind. It's often hard to see/percieve which faulty thinking processes are because of brains not functioning well, and emotional distress. Some of the most heroic things that have ever happened have been while the "hero" was thinking with a broken heart. And so have some of the horrific crimes. The same can be said of those whose minds were broken instead. The upside of both is the human bodies capacity to heal itself. I do not think we must have a psychologist for everything. Not ever broken bone has to be set if it's given a splint and taken care of properly. Most wounds will heal well if infection does not set in. Not everything needs a pro.

In the Academy Award winning movie "Shine" (with Goeffrey Rush) that is what happens to this fellow. (If I recall, it was a true story.)
Some young children, when faced with intense trauma or abuse, develop multiple personalities -- the result is the protection of the mind.
For others who are faced with intense trauma or abuse -- it is stronger than the mind can bear -- and there is a break with reality, and many lifelong mental problems in their future.
