Could it be because Christianity and the bible actually supported, encouraged and condoned such behavior?

The old covenant was lacking in many regards, of which the ten commandments were the core.

These things are covered in the new covenant; the law of the Spirit of faith fulfilled through love.

Child abuse violates love, as well as the rest. Some things, such as slavery, were a long time in being properly resolved.

Dommie - child abuse is not condoned in the Bible. In fact Jesus talks about parenting a great deal. Suffer the little children to come unto me ... Just because someone reaches a particular age does not make them adult enough to have sex. There are good reasons for God to command that there should be no sex outside marriage - pregnancy, disease etc and monogomy - sexual disease, jealousy, lack of trust etc. Just because it is not mentioned in the Bible specifically, does not mean that it is right. Thou shalt not kill could be read as thou shalt not kill (physically, the body) and thou shalt not kill the spirit or innocence of a child or other person ...... What is going on in the Catholic church is horrific but there is a lot in the Catholic church which is wrong, but now is not the time to go into this.

What a silly question. The 'rules' of the ten commandments are just a few of the many rules for the Israelites, and they do include sexual rules.

And the ten commandments preceded Christianity by thousands of years -- kind of like holding you responsible for the failure of Columbus to treat the natives with respect.

But, I don't know why I'm wasting time with your question, when you clearly have your mind made up based on the way you worded your argumentative question. You're not looking for answers, you think you already know the answer.

As someone once wrote, "There is nothing worse in the world than a person with a closed, bigoted mind. Anyone who refuses to open their mind to society, culture, arts, science and education is not worth a single second of my life."

Godspeed you on your journey of discovery.

First the ten commandments in the old testament is mere copy from much older religions. Truly the dark ages. Children had 0 rights. In many, many cultures of that period little girls were married off as mere babies. Even the Hebrews wrote in their Talmud that it was ok to have sex with girls as young as the age of 3! Most folks today no longer accept that of course. The Quran also allowed that kind of thing. It is mentioned throughout the old testament how children could be beaten and even stoned to death for very minor offenses.

The ten commandments were not written as an end all be all for life believe it or not! The New Testament has precedent over the Old anyway. I am quite sure you are aware that Christianity does not condone abuse or slavery!

Ten commandments are not Christian. The are Jewish.

And the Bible says NO ONE can be kept a slave past the sixth year unless the SLAVE agrees to it, then it is forever.

How is your 30 year mortgage on your house doing. Are you a SLAVE to the bank!

Did you wave your 7th year rights

Notice NO CAR company gives 7 year loans.

The Bible also says how a spouse is to treat and behave with their spouse.

And let's define ABUSE

If my SON wants to take a GUN and RAPE YOUR DAUGHTER and ROB YOUR HOUSE and I beat him so badly he can't move and do those things, did I do right or wrong.

If I turn him into the police and they put him in ATTICA, did I do wrong or right.

You decide.

Undestand something, the POLICE do not stop crime BEFORE it happens only AFTER it happens.

Your daughter has to be raped and your house has to be robbed before they will do anything.

There is an INFAMOUS case of a woman who called the Police in Los Angeles and said her boy friend was coming to kill her and they did nothing until AFTER he came and killed her.

At her birthday party.

She was 19.

Now, define ABUSE for us all...

No
Christianity does NOT encourage such behavior.

Read Jesus's words in the New Testament.
Read I Corinthians 13.
Jesus taught us to love others and to treat them the way we want to be treated.
Read 1 Timothy.

If there was anyone in history who could live the Ten Commandments perfectly- they would never do those things either.

But the fact is, no one could live by those laws. Haven't you read Matthew 5?

We are not Christians because we live by the Ten Commandments, we are Christians because we can't! That's why we have recognized the need for Jesus. Through Him we have peace with God.

Of course! There are 3 commandments about God, and four about property rights, which only leaves 3 for anything else, so they cover killing, lying and being nice to your parents.

As if there's nothing else. Or, as if anything more than the Golden Rule is needed, anyway.

Sheesh!
