Your thinking of Joe Medicine Crow, but he was never made Chief. During WW 2 he completed the four requirements of a chief : touching a living enemy soldier, disarming an enemy, leading a successful war party, and stealing an enemies horse.
However, he was never made a chief of his tribe because the title of Chief was retired after the death of " Plenty Coups ", in 1932, the last of the Crow Chiefs.
In 1948 Medicine Crow was made Crow tribal historian and anthropologist.
