My cat and gerbils are going through flea treatment right now, and I have to eliminate fleas in the house as well. I would like advice on which home-spray product to use. PLEASE do not take a shot in the dark at this, this is very important and it needs to work and be safe for my cat and gerbils.

I only say this because a few years ago, my cousin had a flea infestation and she bought some flea remedy to spray around her home and it made her cat really sick. I don't know exactly what happened, but I don't need/want that happening to my pets.

Oh, and also, don't criticise me for my pets having fleas. We've only had this cat for a short while and I guess the flea larva were on her, otherwise we would've seen them earlier. She jumps on the gerbil cage and that is how they were transmitted, but now they are placed in completely different rooms and the gerbils are definitely out of reach. (I only added that because people are rude on here and tend to assume.)

Any flea product is risky.
They are meant to be toxic enough to kill the fleas.
But others could also have a reaction to as well.
So basically 0 is safe.

Well, don't use ANYTHING from a pet store, for your pets or your house. I would think this the product your friend had a problem with was from a store, these products are not reliable.

Indorex, Staykil, and Acclaim are all good products. Skoosh is the newest one on the market, and probably the best and safest since it contains NO pesticides - it kills by mechanical action. With any treatment however you'll have to remove your cat and your gerbil cage from the room before spraying!

There is an easy non toxic way to get rid of fleas in carpet and on furniture. You get Mule Team Borax (it's on the laundry aisle). Sprinkle it everywhere and leave over night. It's ok to walk on it, actually that's good because it gets it into the carpet. In the morning, vacuum it up. The Borax kills the fleas and all the dead bugs go in the vacuum.

This method doesn't make the house smell, won't make the pets sick and is cheaper than any spray you'll find. Works better too.

This is what I told my parents to do.....you can try this and see how it works. It worked for me. Get a small shallow glass bowl, squirt some lemon dishwashing liquid into the bottom of the bowl.( just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl) you need a night light plugged in close to the floor and put the bowl under the light and the fleas will jump in to the bowl. do this in every room. you can even mix lemon juice w/ the dwl. let it sit for a few days then rinse the bowl in hot water in repeat till fleas are gone. I did this last summer when we had fleas real bad and it worked for me. Also, if you have carpet buy a flea collar stretch it and put that in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum real good. the flea collar will kill fleas your vacuum picks up. :)

I use Advantage and do NOT spray the house at all. The chemicals in that are HARSH!!!!!!!!!!!
With Advantage, any newly hatched fleas in the house have to go to the pets, who are treated, and die. You have to treat for at least three months to break the cycle.
