Their were many reasons the early settlers had for coming to America. The founding fathers who developed the Constitution the 'Bill of Rights' and the Constitutional Republic which we now enjoy, created the greatest experiment in government in all of history. There have been many mistakes along the way. Many people have suffered under severe oppression at times, but no system of government and no people have made greater change and correction than have the citizens of this great nation.

By the way, government is the invention of God. It's main but not only purpose according to God's plan is the punishment of evil doers. Many Governments are run by evil men, but that is not God's fault. Men are very often evil, and they will answer for there mis-deeds.

The United States will crumble as a nation someday. Every civilization has. It is up to citizens who care to try to maintain a good and strong nation that creates liberty and opportunity for each of it's citizens for as long as possible. Not at all. This country was founded on Deism and religious freedom. The people above who said it was founded on Christianity obviously have no idea what they're talking about and need to read a history book.

Also, someone above me said "one nation under god", which is an idiotic thing to say during a discussion about the founding of America. "One nation under god" and "in god we trust" weren't added to the pledge or money until the 1950's.

"The United States is in no way founded upon the Christian religion."

It was founded on a lot of things. Not just one of anything.

Oppression and slavery can be found in almost every cultures and nations history including many of those indian and african nations that were later enslaved by this country.

Some of the things likes religious freedom, fair taxation, representative gvt, economic protections are good things the nation was founded on. Slavery, racism, sexism and oppression are some of the bad things this country was founded on.

I am pretty glad it was founded. I love this country.

It was founded on freedom of religion.

Never forget that it was Christians who headed the effort to end slavery in the USA and who sent doctors and teachers to the natives.

Definitely not on slavery or oppesion. Is that a word? Just wondering. I believe it was not solely founded on Christianity, but Christian values. The Pilgrims came here because they were tired of being held to Englands certain religious laws, so wanted religious freedom. Hope this helped

Pilgrims were Christians, but they didn't found this country. They were always English citizens. The rebels who founded this country were secularists who knew that what they wanted least was a theocracy. There is no freedom under a theocracy. They had had enough of forced religion under English rule and wanted to make sure that that would never happen again. Keeping religion out of government, but giving the people freedom to worship as they wished was what this country was founded upon. Granted, slavery was necessary for the success of plantations and near genocide of the native people were evil, but none-the-less...as far as religion goes...this country was NOT a Christian country...nor will it ever be.

Many of the Pilgrims settlers freed their slaves after 7 years like the Bible Said.

Jefferson and Washington didn't.

Now decided who is better, the SECULAR or the RELIGIOUS.

The SECULAR decided not to make SLAVERY and issue for 80+ years and THAT is in the ORIGINAL CONSTITUTION.

Licolin, a REPUBLICAN said it was far too long and far to late to tackle that issue.

THE SECULAR declared that INDIANS, BLACKS, WOMEN and CHILDREN were "other people" counted partially for representatives.

THAT IS WHAT SECULARISM IS ABOUT

Meanwhile, SLAVES in New York, Massachuesstes and other areas were freed before 1700 by the CHRISTIANS who first landed here and made a home.

So you decide.

Secular or Religious.

Which is better

Those who FREED salves in 1690 or those who freed slaves in 1860

You support the SECULAR JEFFERSON AND WASHINGTON who OWNED SLAVES ALL THEIR LIVING DAYS

Take a stand

SOME (admittedly not all) CHRISTAINS freed their slaves LONG before 1776.

THE SECULAR DID NOT AND THAT IS A FACT OF HISTORY.

I would like to believe that this country was founded on Christianity which if you read the history books and a little beyond the books you will find that is was but of course slavery and oppression have a lot to do with this countries history. I say founded on Christianity.

Certainly, those things were a part of our history, but they didn't FOUND the country, dear one. Men who came here and longed to breathe free founded this country and they used Christian/Judeo principals with which to do it.

That is a fact you can't change even with revisionist thinking!

God bless!

By "This Country" do you mean the USA? This is a world-wide forum. Be specific.

I think that the philosophical underpinnings of the Enlightenment had much more to do with the foundations of this country than Christianity.
