thanks for trying Jodie.
Doesn't look like you've got too many interested theists.

I'm thinking that the atheists outnumber the theists on this board these days. they used to come here- but have lost so many arguments they left.

I can understand certain religious groups go overboard when it comes to their beliefs. What one must keep in mind is that not all religious people are same just like not all atheists are same. In fact I feel I may have a more bitter disagreement over my beliefs with another believer than with an atheist since atheists are not so passionate about their beliefs (or non-beliefs) than the believers. It is the result of misinterpretation and misapplication of certain beliefs. But that's the way things are. They can't be wished away. If atheists think they can abolish religion, they are wrong. If theists think they can convert all the atheists they too are wrong. At the most what we can do is to narrow the gap between the two and promote better understanding.

I feel like whoever made this video really needs to update it! I live in Texas, and NONE of that is accurate anymore.

Phishpis...I think it is interesting that you made a smart comment about the lack of answers from believers. I really find it ironic that WE are being asked why atheists care about religion. Do we know? Is this a trick question? I think the video is from about 1989, and obsolete. That is how I feel about it. I love the Lord, and the video did nothing to change that. I am sorry that the atheist making the video could not buy pots and pans, or beer one Sunday because of me.

In the video the monotone voice claimed "I care about religion because fanatics are blowing people and themselves up in the name of their religion." That is happening in places, by people due to reasons other than religion. Why did McVeigh bomb the OK City building? Too many of the comments are generalizations. I could argue with you all day. Quote me something from the video instead of something from a post.

bestonnet: Wow! So because the snippet with the train was from 2005, YOU watched the whole video and I didn't. What about the part with the coins from 2000...1989? You realize, of course, I think you are totally wrong, and you provided NO argument by quoting things Christians said, and trying to ridicule them. That is not a basis for atheism. YOU are not furthering your own cause very well.

I feel that if people don't like the laws of this country, they are free to change them. I feel that if the majority of people in an area have the right to decide what goes on in their area. I also feel that this person should be addressing any constitutional infringements out loud and in company with other atheists.

And I also am pretty sure that if atheists had the upper hand in this country, there would be even less freedom than there is now because freedom of religion would be the first thing to go. As it always is in a predominantly-atheistic society.

You seem to be getting very few answers from the believers. Oh, well.

Too typical

From Tube Root even more typical.

Pinklayni. The sunday shopping laws are the least of my concerns. The laws against holding public office are much more of a problem. Similar civil rights issues tied to religion should be of major concern to everybody.
With the rise of the Religious Right every moderate Christians should be alarmed as well. If you check out the Dominionist policies advocated by them you might understand that the biggest threat to religious freedom is from the religious fundamentalists and not from the atheists. The last thing the atheists care about is if you believe in gods. Or which version of God. Other concerns are much higher on the list. They do care very much that you want to enforce your Gods and your worship as the law of the land.

When they say we are trying to impose our morals on others. Is it not the same as you imposing your morals on us? That is what democracy is all about. You have a right to vote and change things as you see fit. If you do not have the votes things do not change. We have a right to protest things that go against our moral beliefs just as you do. We can play to quote game until we run out of space. I think it is fun when the find one treaty with an obscure one line in it saying we are not a Christian nation. HHHMMMM you think that might have been put just to get someone to sign the treaty. Politics works that way. As for separation of church and state. Find that in the Constitution. It is not there. The entire ruling was not based on the law but an letter penned by Thomas Jefferson to a church. In answer to the fanatics killing and blowing people up. As a Christian and a human being I find that terrible and a horrible waste of life. Again many things just as terrible were and have been done by atheist nations that persecute religions. So that was a unimpressive attempt to blame all the troubles in life on religion. There are many more good things that happen in the name of religion than bad. The only difference is that it does not make for good press and great ratings in the news.

Wow, that was awesome. And it made perfect sense. Even though I belong to no particular religion I do believe in God, but I do not believe my beliefs should effect how the world is run at all. And that part about how people are blowing themselves up all over religion. I hate that people do that.

They say separation of church and state, but it's a lie. People, as was said in the video, us religion to impose their beliefs onto others, actually force it. And I don't agree with that.

I, personally, do not concern myself with what others believe or don't believe. Unless it effects my safety and religion is the only thing that effects my safety and not in a good way.

Okay, finally!

I can honestly say that the maker of that video brought up a lot of good points. This country was founded on religious freedom and was never intended to be a "Christian nation". Religion affects us all, regardless of whether or not we practice it.

Let's see what the believers came up with.
From pinklayni:
"I think the video is from about 1989, and obsolete. That is how I feel about it."
Notice pictures of blown up trains taken in 2005 in there? Guess you didn't bother watching it.

From tuberoot:
"Hehehe. Then they get themselves into trouble by finding out that we can fend for ourselves. I've seen that many times. They find themselves on the defensive quickly."
In arguments no, we don't end up on the defensive at all (at least not those of us who know the arguments against theism).

Though when it comes to laws that's very much a true statement (though we usually also manage to surprise the theists by how well we can fend for ourselves).

From tuberoot:
"The trouble with Atheists is that they haven't figured out that they are basing their belief on faith, just like religious people. They have no proof, but instead of being honest and calling themselves Agnostic, they swallow the Atheist pill."
One doesn't need faith to not believe in something for which there is no evidence. It is believing in something that lacks evidence that requires faith.

I know you'd like to put the burden of proof on us but I won't let you get away with trying to put the burden of proof on anyone it doesn't belong (and it belongs on those who claim god exists).

From wordman:
"If atheists think they can abolish religion, they are wrong."
We probably can't completely get rid of religion but I think it can be marginalised to a minority position that no one really needs to care about (i.e. there'll be so few of them we can just leave them and not worry about them because they'll be unable to do anything bad).

Look at the statistics and you'll see that non religion is growing while religion is shrinking.

Though I do find it strange that the religious response is not really condemning the problems raised. Atheists it seems are more likely to stand up for the rights of minority religious groups than religious people to stand up for the rights of atheists (and even the repressive 'atheistic' regimes which were based on an ideology (communism) with more in common with religion that the secular humanism of most atheists tended to only do the repression half heartedly).

Honestly, I understand your position...There is such a thing as religious fanatics that would even scare me if they were in power...But, there are so many Christians in our country that wouldn't ever vote for an atheist in the presidency..However, there is a new coin dollar out that doesn't have IN God We Trust, on it....
