What is wrong with mixed breeds?

I have been reading through some of the questions here and have come across some very nasty answers about mixed breeds. What is the go.

I just intentionally breed one why does that make me bad.

so you are saying i am scum of the earth. I bet you are a mixed breed.

My dog is a working dog not a show dog and there is a need for good working dogs. So how can you judge me at least I am not breeding for some snotty nosed little princess to get quickly tired of the pups then they go to a shelter.

As long as the breeding is responsible, I have no problems with it. If you had homes lined up for all the puppies, fine, but there are so many wonderful dogs in shelters - sometimes good working dogs are even given up.

I call my dog a mutt proudly. It's not a derogatory thing to me. I'm not sitting at home amongst my purebreds - I've got two former pound puppies around me. They're great dogs.

Purebreds may beat mixes at some competitive events, because my mutt, great as she is, is probably not as good at retrieving as a full retriever, because she wasn't bred for it. There's a time and a place for everything.

Yes, dogs get out, but that's why you research having intact animals and make a responsible decision so it doesn't happen. My dog was probably the result of a dog and a stray mating, and I love her more than any other dog.

Some purebreds are dumb and unhealthy. Properly bred ones should reflect the breed standard - which usually calls for intelligence and health, if I'm not mistaken. Mutts are a crap shoot. They're no different, except that they often aren't bred for certain qualities, unlike purebreds.

I agree with the above answers. I love mixed breeds, but I dont like it when they are deliberately mixed. There are far too many homeless mixes right now. From a breeders point of view, (I breed Rotties) we spend many, many thousand of dollars trying to improve the breed, to keep or improve upon the desired traits, like good dispositions, good health etc. Only the best dogs are selected for breeding, and then to have some fool come along and let a Poodle breed a Rottweiler that you have put so much time and effort into...well, it's wrong. (That is one of the reasons you have to go through so much to buy a dog from a really good breeder, they want to be sure you are dedicated to keeping the breed pure, most want a spay/neuter contract signed for non show quality pups) There is a reason we have breed standards. And just look at the shelters...what do you see? Yes, you will see a few purebreds here and there. But most of these little guys with nobody to love them...are the mixed breeds. It's really sad to know that it is all our fault, if people would just be responsible and spay or neuter their pet, even their purebreds (unless they are breeding excellent dogs to ensure the breeds future) ...this problem would solve itself eventually. But thats in a perfect world....

You are breeding? May i ask what 2 breeds you are mixing? Are you aware of the hereditary problems that are inherent in each of the breeds you are breeding? Have both of your dogs been OFA certified against genetic defects? Have both your dogs been hip health certified? Do you have the pedigree of both dogs? By that, I mean can you trace them back at least 3-5 generations and have all of those in their immediate line been OFA and hip health certified? Do both of your dogs meet their breeds standards in both body type and temperament? Do you line up homes that are appropriate to each pups temperament and personality? Do you have a waiting list and try to secure possible homes before the birth of the pups? what kind of checks do you put your adopters through before approving them as a home? Are your puppies spayed/nuetered or do you make your adopters sign a spay/nueter contract BEFORE puppies go to a new home? Do you actually check up that the pup has been spayed/neutered as per the contract? Do you have a policy to take back unhealthy, genetically defective, or unwanted pups at ANY TIME during their life span? This is just a very small list of things that a reputeable and responsible breeder should be doing. The very sad truth is that most breeders (and pretty much all who breed mixes or put ads in the local paper) are not responsible or reputeable and are either breeding their dogs for the wrong reason (IE: color/size, profit) or just dont have a clue that breeding should be to ensure genetically healthy dogs and not just putting any two dogs together to make a buck as that generally produces genetically unsounnd dogs that wind up in the shelters. That is my problem with people who breed mixes, I have yet to find one who does it responsibly, not to mention you shouldnt be creating a new breed of dog just to be "cute" or "trendy". The dogs you breed should serve a purpose and they should be bred responsibly with care to make sure they all find homes with responsible people so they do not end up in a shelter that is already over-crowded and understaffed...

So if your dog is a working dog, what is wrong with breeding purebred working dogs? There are plenty of breeds to choose from to breed responsibly-you don't have to create mutts to have working dogs. Flawed logic on your part. Or a pathetic attempt to justify the fact that you have created mutts for no reason.
Dog lovers do not hate mutts. We hate the fact that thousands are dying every year and still people like you think it is alright to breed more. How wasteful and irresponsible is that?

This is a topic that seems to really set a lot of people in the dog world off. Me included, but I try to be as constructive as possible - some people just don't know any better - I was one of these people 2 years ago.

To answer your question though........

It's not only cross breeds that cause tempers to rise, it's any dog that is bred without knowledge of it's lines. This is not a snob thing (as I used to think), it is a health thing.

To be a registered breeder means you have at least a working knowledge of genetic or are at the very least prepared to test your breeding stock for potential health issues BEFORE you breed. eg: Hip and Elbow scores, DNA testing for various diseases. You also know the temperament of all the dogs in your lines and the likely temperament of the pups. With dogs bred by puppy mills or even well meaning Back Yard Breeders not only is there little or no knowledge of these things, but often there is scant disregard for the feelings of the poor people who have to put their loved littlies to sleep (me) or who have to spend thousands upon thousands keeping their dogs alive because of poor breeding.

While a pedigree does not guarantee a result or the health of a pup it is a pup bred by an educated (in the dog world, not by degree/institution necessarily) breeder who has the best interests of the breed an the potential owners of their pups at heart.

nothing is wrong with mixed breeds- I think you have been reading posts on designer breeds. The problem with them is that people are charging an arm and a leg for essentially, a mutt.
Most people on this forum tend to be pro-mutt, if anything, lol, except for the people posting they want some rare breed that is only available in 1 country or are breeding designer breeds, which they do not consider mutts.


As for the poster who is pissed off about someone calling his wolf hybrid a mutt- that is what it is. I own mutts too, I have paid a lot of money (well $200) for a mutt that had awesome personality and temperment. you are getting really angry over just a simple word, please pick something that is actually work fighting over- if you are going to hit someone for calling a dog a mutt- you have anger issues- go smoke or get laid, honestly.

what's the component in blending breeds as quickly as we've maximum of of them in shelters already? we've purebreds for a reason, they have been stepped forward because of the fact they are predictable. in case you prefer a preserve dogs, you will prefer an easier time only going out and paying for a German Shepherd than attempting to %. by way of a lot of mixed breed dogs until eventually you detect one that suits your desires. the reason people get disillusioned on the mutts on right this is via the fact they are purposefully bred. No respected breeder is going to purposefully combination dogs breeds because of the fact no one retains information on mutts' wellness and temperament, to not point obtainable is not any time-honored to reproduce to. no one has any situation, with mixed breeds, in actuality, many persons very own them. yet they are rescues, not "professionally bred Maltipoos". they are only mutts.

I think it's that people are saying that they're against people who breed dogs of mixed breeds just to make $$$$. They're animals not money making machines.
Hybrid vigor is a load of rubbish I know of countless mixed breed dogs that have unfortunately inherited the problems of both breeds they're made up of.

I have owned many mixed breeds and my current dog is my first purebreed show dog. Mixed breeds are just dogs, just like humans interbreed with race.i dont think of an african and a white person as a mixed mutt. regardless of what 2 types of breeds are interbred,its irrelavent. Dogs have personalitys and it is the way people interact and treat them that makes them so called mutts.basically people are stuck up and have major issues about mixed breeds. people that own pure breeds think that they have the best of the best, what rubbish, any dog from a shelter will be your best companion for life just like a pure breed.Its all about peoples ego.!

Nothing is wrong with mixed breeds. It's breeding them that is the big problem. You are not bettering any breed by doing so and contributing to overcrowded shelters. Plain and simple there are not enough homes for thousands of dogs now so why breed unnecessarily. Thousands are put down everyday in this country. So see it's not mixed breed dogs it's the irresponsible breeding.
