When a Word document is sent over a network, what is the format it is sent in? i.e., if we have a probe in the network and collect all packets corresponding to the document, how does it look?

Word 2007 documents are xml (.docx extension), but earlier versions (.doc extension) were proprietary formats.

Hope that helps.

When you send a Word document to someone who has the same software as the sender, it will look the same to the receiver. Where you run into trouble is when the sender and receiver have two different versions. In this case, it may sometimes be necessary for the sender to save the Word document as a text file so the receiver can open it.
