I just don't get people that hate cats and say that they are useless and dumb!! Cats are just as smart as dogs, but they just don't want to listen to you!! Why are there cat-haters out there?

As an example of the intellegance of cats , a couple years back I had these toys for my cat that were different colors. I told her the name of each color toy a couple times, switched her toys around, asked her which one was green, and she put her paw on the one that was green!! I sware, I'm not delusional. I even taught her how to do a trick so she can get her treat!! My cat even opens doors!! I'm sure there are other people out there who have witnessesed the same thing by their cat(s)! My cat's too lazy to open doors anymore, though. She just meows forever cuz she knows I'm gonna get up sooner or later.

Plus, I lock my door, so she knows it's no use trying to get in my room.

Because cats are just like people! They chose to do what they want, come with their own personalities and are just so clever! I love my dog but I just don't get her sometimes. I think dogs must just have two mind sets- STOKED! and 'did I do something bad?'. Cats don't care either way, they have a gray area. I am constantly baffled by my dog- why did she act out? Why is she staring into space? What makes something want to eat a mattress?! I always know exactly what my cat is thinking and why she does the things she does. She makes it very clear to me and the only time she stares off into space is when there's a bug to stalk!

I love cats. I never trust a person that doesn't like cats, they just wouldn't get me!

Many people mistake the sub-servient behaviour of a dog as loyalty. Cats don't need to live in a group to survive, so their independent nature is misinterpreted by many as aloofness.

Different animals have different innate behaviours. For example, an untrained cat and an untrained Border Collie dog are both presented with a group of ducklings. The dog herds the ducklings and protects them. The cat stalks the ducklings and eats one or more of them. Is the cat unintelligent because it doesn't herd the ducklings? Is the dog unintelligent because it fails to identify those ducklings as prey and it doesn't take advantage of a meal opportunity?
Neither creature is more or less intelligent than the other if judged by this test. Both performed according to their instinct.

Sarah Hartwell has written a really good article about cat intelligence which you might enjoy reading.

I really don't know I just asked that question myself. I just decided people who hates cats is just closed minded and don't want to work as hard for the love of a pet I have had a cat for 2 years now and she is awesome she comes when I call and she gives kisses when I ask. Cats have intuition about things and I think that threatens the cat haters. They are way smarter than dogs.

Cats are aloof and like to be alone more than a dog so they are harder to get to know. Cats definitely are not dumb. In some ways they are smarter than a dog. For instance if I want to fool my dog because I'm going to give him a bath or anything I just have to say lets go for a walk then grab him. I have to give my cat medicines lately and there is no way I can fool her, as soon as I start to get the meds ready she has disappeared. What people don't understand is cats are smart at being cats and dogs are smart at being dogs. Their both smart. Did you hear about the cats watching the sled dogs pulling the sled in the snow. One cat turns to the other and says "that proves we are smarter us cats would never do anything like that". Sorry I don't remember exactly how the joke goes but you get the idea.

Many people desire the absolute loyalty and devotion of a dog, rather than the independent "I'll love you when I want to" attitude of cats. Personally I love both. I have 2 cats and will get a dog after vet school (so I have more free time and the space to keep one). Some people have just had bad experiences with cats. I know a lot of veterinary students that were very leery to get a cat because the only real exposure they had was to stressed, pissed off cats getting poked and prodded in a strange place. My parents claimed they didn't like cats for the longest time, but they love both of mine, and my sister's. Most people who hate cats really haven't owned them, and have negative associations with cat personalities. It's unfortunate, but there are plenty of dogs that need homes, so I guess the world needs all kinds.

Juan is onto something. There's a misperception about cats that's been left over from medievel times, when people were burned for being witches and their familiars were felines. I've seen a lot of educated people who continue to view cats as somehow evil. Personally, I've never had a disloyal cat and they can learn tricks, be loving, even help the disabled. There should be a cat whisperer in my opinion. Lots of very easy-to-fix behavioral problems on this site.

CAT-HATER has a tiny brain and tiny heart so therefore YOU can not comprehend that to get respect from any animal you have to give respect to ALL animals. You said it yourself..... "I hate cats because I am allergic to them"......well, It is no animal or a pets fault that you have an allergy to that one particular species. This so happens to be a cat so therefore the cat is suppose to be dumb?....hmmm....how do you justify something like that?. This is not about worshiping cats; it is about having love and respect for animals. Pets have been proven to help heal and comfort the sick and disabled in a way a human can not. All animals have a purpose to be on this earth just as much as humans do. For you to say you hate cats; you are basically saying you hate all animals.

That is a really good question! One I have asked myself many times. I find the company of a cat more comforting then the company of most people I know. They are extremely smart and I think they can understand every word we say. They just don't want us to know that! And they are capable of incredible empathy. There have been many times I have been crying and my cat has come to me and actually touched my tears with her nose and put her paw on my hand. (No, I'm not crazy and I'm not exaggerating!) I think some people don't like the idea of a "common house cat" being so astute and in tune with humans. I think it not only scares them, it threatens their delicate sensibilities.
I cannot imagine life without cats!
Thanks! This was fun!

They fear what they do not understand.
You can own a dog.
A cat allows you to live in YOUR house.
Dogs have masters, Cats have Staff.
Cats are like children...only with fur.
Children don't listen either.
A lot of old wives's tales is where
some of the problems got started.
I love cats, they are part of our family.
Right now, there is a large white cat
giving me wonderful cat kisses while I type.
I have moved her several times
because she keeps walking on the keyboard
and "fhn uiwetaw" doesn't mean anything
to you or me,
but it must mean something to her.
