I have no idea what your feelings of the war in Iraq is, and actually it's not an issue if you are looking for charity work.

ANYSOLDIER.COM is a place where soldiers sign up for support. Check it out. It's a good organization.

Otherwise contact some local churches, the YWCA for women and children that are in shelters for the holidays.

Just some ideas.

Call your local United Way, or go to their site www.unitedway.org to find charities. Contact local churches or shelters, also. If you're going to give toys, make sure they are new (would you want someone giving your child a used or broken toy for Christmas?) and unwrapped. I also make sure that if the toy needs something to work (batteries, other parts, etc) that I include that because the recipients usually have no way to buy accompaniments. One thing to note: everyone gives at Christmas and the charities are often over run; why not give at other times of the year? Toiletries, especially, are the most needed and they are needed all of the time (full sized). God bless you for thinking of others and doing what you can to help!

There are tons of organizations that help children for Christmas. Wal-mart, the schools, toys for tots, volunteer action center (also know as the VAC), The Shriner's, local churches, if the family is a victim of domestic violence the DV office usually helps. There's honestly too many to name. Call you local Department of Children and Family Service to find out who you have in your area.

Every year I buy some Christmas presents through the World Vision gift catalogue. In honor of someone you can buy classroom supplies, or food, or a goat, or things like that for a family in need. They also have cards that you can give your recipient so they'll know what you did in honor of them.

Also, I've bought a gift certificate through Kiva. They loan people money for starting a business in a developing country. They have a phenomenal 97+% pay back on the loan (higher than any banks in the western world)!. You can read about who is asking for a loan and why, and see their photos on the Kiva website. Once the loan is repaid, you can get your money back or lend it to someone else! The loans are usually in increments of $25. If you buy a gift certificate, your recipient decides who to loan the money to so it's fun that they can get involved too.

Call your local TV stations. They will undoubtedly have a list of several organizations you can give your donations to. Many of those will be discussed prior to Christmas time in their news casts so others will know how to get in touch with those organizations.
