...with full knowledge they may be required to kill, and with full knowledge that the casualties are often civilians with no way out of the combat zone.

Does the Bible say that it's ok to kill someone on accident as long as you were trying to kill someone else on purpose, but missed?

Killing in actual first person self defense is one thing. Killing in anticipation of the need for self defense is another. Religious fundamentalists with this kind of attitude are the supreme antagonist to society.

You need to read the book of Genesis, the chapters immediately following the Great Flood. The Great Flood came because the world was incredibly violence and perversions. After the Flood, God told the new generations that if a man spills the blood of another man, then his blood shall be spilt. In other words, this is the basis for state sanctioned capital punishment. God also condones wars to defend the righteous principals. Being that murderers killed our people on 9/11, our government called our troops to war in Afghanistan. That's okay.

Yes, the Bible does say this... but have you seen where in the old testament GOD told Joshua and other leaders to kill a tribe or clan etc? God told them to thoroughly kill certain peoples, and when they did it they were not breaking the commandment because God instituted it. Killing someone to protect your country and your loved ones is not the same at all as killing someone for some trifle reason. There needs to be some godly Christian men and women in the military to speak for God and to be a help and blessing to people. Whether they enlisted before or after salvation does not matter. In war it is a simple fact that either you kill or get killed. I'd want our troops to defend themselves and by God's grace return home to their loved ones. God bless our troops... especially those who are in Christ.

I have a brother in Iraq. When he came back on leave he turned to my other brother (a Catholic missionary) about just such an issue. By listening to the conversation they had, I gathered that since the killing wasn't premeditated and he didn't do it willingly, the person doing the killing isn't beyond redemption.

The logic involved in this seems like religion is trying to rationalize breaking one of their most fundamental rules.

The laws of Moses where nailed to the cross with Jesus, he fulfilled the law so those who follow him don't have to live by the law. Even in the old Testament, God instructed his people to kill, even what you would call innocents. I think you just want to start a war here.

The whole "thou shalt not kill" is actually a condensed version from the original "thou shalt try really hard not to kill, unless the other guy prays to a different invisible avenger than you do, in which case go ahead", which makes a lot more sense.

I beleive it was meant as Thou shall not murder. Considering Christians (and all faiths) have been spilling blood since the beginning of time, it's not going to stop happening.
And if you want to keep that freedom to BE a Christian, I suggest you do your part.

Boxed Juice: THANK YOU for your service.

If it weren't for the military, you would not have the freedom to complain...No one loves war, but it has been around since old testament times...Jesus told us to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's... Which meant we follow our government laws..also. I wish war would stop...But, that's not likely to ever happen...
