To solve this problem think of a situation.
For example, you have 20 slices of cheese and you want to divide them equally among three families.
So deal out the slices to each family one at a time
llllll 6 slices for family 1
llllll 6 slices for family 2
llllll 6 slices for family 3
6+6+6= 18 slices
After giving each family six slices of cheese you would have 2 slices left over.
Now, how can you divide up 2 slices among three families?
If you divide each slice into three parts (each 1/3 of a slice) you would have a total of six parts. You can give each family 2 of these parts.
That would be 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3 of a slice of cheese.
When you add the 2/3 slice to the previous six slices you see that each family would get 6 and 2/3 slices of cheese.
So the answer to what is a third of 20 slices of cheese is 6 and 2/3 slices of cheese.
(Such an odd question to ask in Food and Drink.....)
