Germany scraped together pretty much all its remaining reserves to try and smash the allies on the western front. It almost worked; the allied forces were taken by surprise and had trouble resupplying due to winter weather but managed to hang on until the german offensive ran out of steam. ('The Bulge' was the big salient created where the germans punched into the allied line, almost rupturing it.) In the end, the Battle of the Bulge actually hastened Germany's defeat. In a matter of weeks they expended a large amount of their reserve fuel and ammunition, and some of their best equipment and units were captured after running out of supplies. (The allies pincer-attacked around the German main body, and came within a few kilometers of totally encircling them.) If those forces had been used bit by bit in a mobile defense, they might have dragged the war on another year.

It was not so much a chant, but the answer the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division gave the German commander who asked him to surrender. General McAuliffe said "Nuts!"

The commanding officer of the 101st Airborne holding out in Bastogne delivered that message to the Germans that had been demanding their surrender. I'm a big 101st fan, and this had to be their finest hour/week.

My Dad was there. He made it very clear more than once that it was miserably "cold". The "chant's" were being done here. Those guys were up to their butts in dead bodies(many just froze while sleeping), ducking artillery and bullets, praying for a dry place to sleep and not getting fed every day.

mostlikly NUTS. great message sent to german commander demanding a surrender form the 101st. he said think of your men. the commander said NUTS basicaly saying F*CK you we dont need any help from you. yes we are cold, yes we are hungry, yes we have NO ammo, but we will still shuve it up your A*S and hold out longer than you bastards!! yeah. thats about it.
