Your dog is really still a puppy. He is probably getting bored and looking for something to do when he chews the water hose. I am guessing he is probably alone in the yard when he does this chewing. Easiest short term solution...your Mom needs to put up her water hose instead of leaving it in the yard. A long term solution that probably won't go over at all well with your Mom, get your dog some company so he will not get bored during the day.

All of the behaviors scream "frustration", this dog needs a life with more activities, he needs to run and play with YOU, his owner. Dogs must be trained not to dig, or bark and live in 25 minute segments. They can actually go insane if not given enough attention. Please begin walking your dog for at least 45 minutes everyday, make sure he has together time. If, you cant spend the quality time with your dog, think about calling the German Shepard rescue and surrender him so that someone that does have the time to really give him a good life, can. When you get your own place and have the set up for a dog, (let them live in the house) and have the time to train him not to do naughty things that All puppies do, and those dogs are puppies for two years, then you can get a dog and keep the dog happy and you will be a happy dog owner. They have water hoses that are a lot less than $50, but I can sense your mom's frustration.

All the answers here lead you to think about an obedient class or training. Why is your dog displaying this behaviour? Do you leave him unattended for long periods of time? Maybe he has separation anxiety. He needs to be occupied with good things. I'm sorry to hear that you are going through all that, it can really be frustrating! Maybe you could dedicate a few hours a day with him, to play and recreation together. I also think it's an age thing, he's still a young dog, learning things. He's still able to learn good behaviour and get rid of bad traits.

He's still a puppy.Get him some chew toys, and a bottle of Bitter Apple spray to spray on the things you don't want him to chew on.keep the hose where he can't get to it.Take him for MORE walks, and enroll him in obedience class. It sounds like you are ready to give up on this dog, which would be a shame.German shepherds are the best dogs ,and they mature a little later than some breeds. You have to give the dog a chance to mature and please don't tie him up or lock him in a kennel.Training and patience will get you a wonderful dog in a few months if you just give him a chance.

first of all never put your dog in a kennel or tie him up as a punishment. Thats very very bad to do. Your just ignoring the problem by doing that. Dogs chew because there bored, no matter how many toys you have or how many you walks you take them on. It just means you need to go for longer walks, play with him once and awhile and if you seem him ripping stuff up, then you yell no and take away whatever it is and replace it with a toy. If hes doing it when your not watching, then it's obvious you can't leave him unnatended. Tie a leash around your waste and make him go whereever you go .

**Never, ever smack your dog on the nose or anywhere on his body. This is awful advice and will turn your dog into a biter. *****
Then don't put these things where he can reach them. Hoses are a lot of fun to chew and destroy - especially when the pup may not have been provided with appropriate chew toys.
These are essential. Fill a Kong with his food, get a Twist and Treat and feed him that way - get him rawhides and bully sticks to keep him busy.
Dogs do not associate punishment with what they do unless that punishment immediately follows the behavior. You cannot put a dog into a time out unless you catch him in the act - and even then, consider carefully why your dog deserves a time out. If you left out forbidden items for him to chew, then it's your fault. Don't punish your dog for your mistake.

Your dog is acting out. This is normal. Dogs don't understand human boundaries unless they are shown them. Dogs are biologically driven to please their 'alpha,' and it is up to you to become that. putting the dog up makes no sense to the dog, and that punishment is unsuccessful without other actions.
Catch your dog in the act. Lightly smack his nose, and say something in an angry voice. Do this again. Don't fail to catch him. If you see him start to misbehave, and you tell him 'no!' in a commanding voice, and he stops, praise him, give him very positive reenforcement.
There are better ways of dog discipline (positive only reenforcement), but I don't know how they work, and for now this will work for you. Few dogs are bad - they only need to be positively corrected into meeting your (the alpha) needs.
**smacking a dog on the nose does not necessarily lead to biting. show me a good source on that!**
however, i specifically stated that, while this is an effective deterrent, that there are better ones, although i don't know the precise workings of them (the top experts talk of things like positive reenforcement only, considering negative reenforcement just giving dogs attention which is what they desire).
i have raised dogs for well over 30 years, and smacking a muzzle is effective. i had one dog, ONE, that nipped two people over her lifetime. however, that does not mean i am not willing to learn better ways to match dog behaviors to our expectations

Read Cesar's Way, by Cesar Millan or another book that can help you learn to be a dominant personality. You could also call in a trainer - but your dog needs rules, boundaries, limitations, and exercise!!
