he dose look like a pit, however there are many breeds that resemble a pit. this is part of why they have such a bad rap! unless he has papers, it's hard to say for sure:)

Owner of both breeds.
It is likely that the dog is a Pit Bull(APBT/AST). Looks pretty much like one to me. Although other breeds can resemble APBTs, especially as pups.
Where did you get him? Breeder, friend, stranger, shelter?
I have seen Boerboels in shelters labeled as Bullmastiff or Boxer mixes which they clearly are not. Heck I saw a Chow Chow called a Golden Retriever mix.
If you bought him from a breeder he is probably an APBT, as if he were a Boerboel that is what they would have sold him as.
It is possibly that he is a bandog of sorts. As many breeders are breeding other larger mastiff breeds with Pit Bulls and still selling them as APBT. Even with papers because they will just falsify the papers. So he could possibly have Presa or Corso influence.
If you got him from a shelter then he could be a mix of Pit Bull and another large breed, as mentioned before I have seen the crosses of Presa advertised as such and others advertised as "purebred Pit Bulls". Some of the dogs indeed end up in shelters. I really see no Boerboel influence though. Really no for sure way of telling by pics. Especially not a pup. Adult pics will be better.

You were told he was a pit bull, and therein lies the problem. See, pit bull is not technically a breed and is generally a catch-all for American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, plus or minus even more breeds, and is usually including mixes with these breeds as well.
Your boy looks much more massive than a typical American Pit Bull Terrier, but this too is not uncommon. There are Back Yard Breeders making all kinds of new "pit bulls" everyday by breeding them with bulldogs and mastiffs and trying to get massive-chested and low-lying dogs with huge heads. The pure APBT does not resemble many of the Pit Bulls that are out there now.
Pits have wrinkles, and very very expressionative faces. That isn't hard evidence that your dog may not be a pit bull. His tail also looks REALLY thick, which APBTs tend to have "pump handle" tails which are not very long nor are they thick.
I do think your dog is beautiful - but I don't see that he is a pure APBT or a Boerboel.
Do love him anyway.
:)

A trainer is definitely a good idea. If your going to have children soon, you may want to tell the trainer that, because the dog being only one year old he will obviously be around for some time. Large dogs or aggressive breeds have a one master mindset. The dog might not want to let anyone else in without testing them. You may want to ask yourself, how he gets along with your man, or anyone else in your life, before you get even more committed to your dog, then you already are. I hope this training works, you want to stay involved in the training and get some books, and look into some websites on the subject of training dogs as well. You take care and, I hope you and your dog have a long and happy life together. I know that you are a hands on type person, but the dog trainer might not see it that way, so get one that does. Bubba used to be one of my nick names when I played ball years ago, so woof, woof.

Highly unlikely you got an African Boerboel as you would have paid thousands to purchase one.
You have a Pit Bull Terrier or PBT mix. An African Boerboel is a much larger dog than the Pit Bull is.

I believe your dog is pit bull, I just hope you dont fight him, or let him have any worries or stresses, keep him sweet and kind and stop the bad press these dogs are getting by owners that make them mean.
Yes both dogs are similar, but I really feel yours may be a pitt mix?? Good looking dog!
