and he doesnt really run that much. He looks more like a bear cub (he is kind of chubby). He would lick us occasionally and tries to play with our children but most of the time he prefers to sit or sleep in his gated corner...he eats well and 99% of the time releases himself outside.
does this sound normal?? i am worried about hip displasia - can you even tell at this age by the way they walk?

Well, the thing with hips on a puppy that age is that you can not see anything if he is x-rayed. So that would be a waste of film. At 7 weeks an experienced person can see how the dog stands and moves and can normally see if the hips are too loose. Hips can tighten up as a puppy grows, but I would not like seeing very loose hips on a 7 weeker. The chubbiness could be because he gets bellied out after eating, but it could be that he might be loaded with worms. At 7 weeks, puppies sleep a lot. He should be able to run around though. Take him in to the vet and have his stool checked and have the vet palpate his hips to check for laxity with them.

What kind of bloodlines is this pup? West German Show, DDR, Czech, Slovak, American Show?

What do some of the people who have answered think a couple that have a dog but no kids then end up having a baby should do with their dog, obviously get rid of it.Look around you at all the families with kids of all ages from newborns, toddlers etc...and they have dogs.Yes toddlers can be a little heavy handed and some toddlers can be rough(if you have a child like this,I wouldn't advise a dog at this stage)Most dogs if they grow up from a young pup with small children will love that child and tolerate the odd cuddle thats actually a squeeze. If all the people who had dogs that bit their toddlers we would never have them as pets.I had dogs before my kids were born and even as tiny babies,I can remember my little girl would whizz around in her baby walker and grab at the dogs(we had german shepherds)the dogs never so much as batted an eyelid.I eventually had four kids and acquired a malamute along with the shepherds and I can honestly say I've never had an instance where I thought the dogs might bite one of the kids.My kids are older now,the youngest is 4 and both kids and dogs have wonderful relationships.I still don't leave my 4 year old unsupervised if he's playing with the dogs,he's very gentle but once I caught him trying to put lego in one of my dogs ears.Research on the internet as many dogs are wonderful with kids,Labs, retreivers, german shepherds, king charles spaniel, irish setters, viszla's,shih Tzu all are known to be exteremely tolerant and they are just a few,as long as you train your pup, give him adequate exercise and supervise your child stroking your dog it will be fine.If possible try and read or do a course in dog psychology/behaviour as this will help you understand your dogs body language and many dog bites could be avoided if people knew more about their dogs behaviour.

he's 7 weeks old. A puppy at 7 weeks old, expecially a large breed puppy will spend about 99% of his time sleeping for the first couple months because they are growing so fast. I wouldn't worry about Hip displacia. Check to see if he's cow hocked or pigeon toed. Some puppies tend to walk a little on a angle at first. At 7 weeks old though let him sleep as much as he can. Don't force him to go on walks on over exert him. Once he sits down or lies down..pick him up and put him to bed. Trauma to his joints at such a young age can cause serious problems such as OSteochondriotin (OCD) look it up on the web it's common in large breed puppies. I know because my 7 month old just had surgery for it in his shoulder and he was sort of the same way as a puppy

I can tell you right now that´s not normal behavior for a puppy. If it´s not hip displasia, he might be anemic. I would take him to the vet and make sure he´s not having trouble with a parasite. My mom´s a petsitter and one of her customers gave us a litter to place. A lot of the puppies were really struggling with walking, and with an hour we knew why. They had one of the worst cases of worms I´d EVER seen.

Puppies are like babies and when then walk they do tend to wobble a bit. The chubby is probably just puppy fat but however a visit to your local vet will put your mind at ease and I would certainly recommend it.

At 7 weeks, puppies do seem to walk funny. They walk, they hop, they fall all over themselves. They're just goofy looking. That's what makes them so cute!

And sleeping, eating, and pooping sounds normal to me.

Bring him to the vet if you're seriously concerned.

that is definatly not normal for a pup, he might have worms or a parisite, take him to the vet so that they can have him checked out, where did you get him? that might help too.
