My puppy was about 6 months, but I guess it depends on the breed and the individual - some dogs never will.

If the male puppies are around other, older male puppies, they will imitate them and begin lifting their legs to pee. If there are only females around, or no other dogs at all around, they might never do this. Lifting the leg is learned, not bred. At least, that's been my experience.

well I have my own experiance with that one cause my dog had a litter of puppys and everyone i knew got a puppy, and as they got older only one started lifting his at the age of 6 months cause he was with daddy since he was born( not saying that was the only reason). The second one took about the time that he was 11 months old, and the last one still to this day does not lift his leg and he is now 1 1/2 yrs old. Its funny to say but when he is ready he will.
there is never going to be a time i personaly think that you can say that your dog is going to lift his leg....lol but think of this you have to worry about his marking everthing

It truly depends on the dog.

In mild rebuttal to a couple of previous answers, I live with 7 adult dogs, the youngest of which is the only male. He doesn't have another male role model. He started lifting his leg when he was about 7 months old, but only on the huge tree in the middle of the yard. He's now 4 years old and pees both in the slight squat forward lean position and by lifting his leg on that big tree.

Several of my girls "mark" trees - not by lifting their legs, but backing upwards up a tree (sort of like trying to climb up backwards) and then they somehow pee backwards. Very odd (and very funny) to watch. But perhaps that's why he pees on that tree by lifting his leg - that way he can mark higher.

some vets will do the surgical treatment previously the dogs lifts its leg yet do what your vet is soft doing. a great type dogs like a border collie would take longer to sexually mature because of the fact their develop hormones decrease off later because of the fact the dogs strengthen for an prolonged time than small dogs. some people wait to have the dogs neutered at a 365 days as much as 18 months if the dogs is a great breed dogs because of the fact the upward push plates would have closed via then and that provides the dogs a definite visual charm. yet while your dogs would not stay in or is around unfixed women, detect a vet who will neuter it asap. some people desire the dogs to strengthen the leg because of the fact it is going to pee on timber and poles and then that isn't circulate away enormous urine burns on the backyard.

This habit comes at different times for different dogs. There is no set time, and if you are lucky, it will never happen. This does not mean you have a "sissy" male dog, just one that doesn't hike a leg and mark on everything. Males will still mark without lifting their leg, but it is less offensive.

I raise chihuahuas and so I can only go by them. I have one boy who was neutered at 10 weeks old because he was having a hernia repaired so I didnt want him to ever be bred so I opted to neutered at the same time so he wouldnt have to be put under for a second surgery, anyway Digger still squats to pee and he is 4 years old. My other 3 boys all started trying to hike and pee at around 4-5 months old. Hope this helps some.

My dog is a girl and she cocks her leg somtimes. they only really lift their legs if they're peeing on something like a car or a tree stump. Not all dogs lift their legs like over weight dogs dont normally or some dogs with short legs.

Actually this is a learned habit, a bad habit at that.
If you catch your dog lifting his leg as a pup, you can correct him with a quick "Ah!!" and he will eventually learn to stop lifting his leg and just squat, like the girls :)

All of my male dogs squat like girls, and I do my best to teach my male fosters-in-training to stop lifting their legs if they have already picked up that habit.

There is nothing worse than a male dog who lifts his leg on every tree, shrub, person, dog, trash can, and fire hydrant in sight, just because he feels he needs to "mark it".
