I'm not sure that anyone changed it. I know that new research, in particular by David Parker, has shown evidence that while many Bibles say that the number translated from the original Greek could be 616, experts say new photographic evidence of an ancient fragment of papyrus from Revelation indeed indicates the number is indeed 616, instead of 666. Only time and more study will tell for sure.

Where do you get this information?
Each of the letters of the alphabet in Hebrew as well as in Greek has a numerical value. Many possible combinations of letters will add up to 666, and many candidates have been nominated for this infamous number. The most likely is the emperor Caesar Nero (see the note on Rev 13:3), the Greek form of whose name in Hebrew letters gives the required sum. (The Latin form of this name equals 616, which is the reading of a few manuscripts.) Nero personifies the emperors who viciously persecuted the church. It has also been observed that "6" represents imperfection, falling short of the perfect number "7," and is represented here in a triple or superlative form.
the early manuscripts reffered to are most likely early Roman Catholic manuscripts that had other translation issues with hebrew numbers. However the hebrew and aramaic translations all say 666

Not true.
Every Greek letter has a numerical value.
Every Jewish believer knew that 8 is the number of God (more than perfect which is "7") in the Bible and that Jesus' name in Greek adds up to 888.
6 is the number of man, less than complete or less than perfect. Pay attention carefully, you'll see that the passage says He who has wisdom let him calculate the name of the beast for it is the number of his name.
No, it was not altered.
By the way, those 3 early manuscripts are very unreliable and error filled. They don't agree with each other and if one of them has 616, I guarantee the other two do not.
The thousands of other manuscripts all agree and they were copied independently over the centuries.
Those 3 manuscripts have since been identified as part of a rush order that Constatine place and the monks at the time knew they were error filled, thus they were found in trash bins and corrected in the margins, etc.
Don't listen to your lib profs, they are biased and don't have a clue what they're talking about!

Boy you like stirring the pot up Sara.
Unfortunately, the apologists above are all incorrect. Oxyrhynchus Papyri Fragment P115 does have the number as 616.
But of course the apologists will make up something else to try and explain this away.

God changed it. He took 616, added 100 to it, and then subtracted 50. See? It's grade school math.

it wasnt changed. 666 or 616 has no significance. they are just numbers because there is no 'beast', 'devil', or what ever you want to call him.
