Jan 2008 is when the US government starts giving out coupons that will let you buy a couple digital TV converter boxes for about $20 each.

These boxes let your old TV tune in all of the new digital TV channels that are broadcast over the air.

On 2/17/2009 almost all of the old analog over the air broadcasts will stop, so if you get TV for free with an antenna, you want to have a converter on it before then or buy a new TV, DVD recorder, or DVR that includes a digital (ATSC) tuner.

Some of the Digital TV (DTV) broadcasts are in HD, but this doesn't matter to people using old TVs. The cheap converter boxes can convert all the OTA channels, including HD ones, and will send a signal that is similar in quality to that of a DVD player to your old TV.

Old type OTA TV signals = NTSC = "Analog TV"
New type OTA TV signals = ATSC = "Digital TV" = DTV
OTA = "Over the Air" = stuff you get through your TV antenna

I thought that this was to happen in Feb.09. Whenever, all broadcast will go from analog to digital. The Gov. will give us a credit of about $25 to help off set the cost of a box which will change digital back to analog. Net cost to you will be about $25. On the other side of the equation, you will no longer have to buy or rent a box to get the digital broadcast. I have eight TV's so I will have a problem.

its actually february 2009. the fcc is switching all over-the-air broadcasts 2 digital from analog. u don't necessarily have 2 have a high def tv but its recommended. though u will have 2 have either have a tv with an atsc tuner, which is a digital tuner, or a digital cable or satellite receiver. so basically as long as u have cable or satellite ur fine.

February 17, 2009 .....ALL over the air (not cable or satellite) TV stations will cease transmitting ANALOG signals, and will only transmit the DIGITAL Tv signals......

2012 is the ANTICIPATED date for Cable/Satellite signals to go DIGITAL only.....
