sometimes they are necessary. i had one done in march. the only thing you feel before the procedure is the prick from the IV, and then when you are actually in the room they do the endoscopy they hook you up to a BP machine and track your pulse with something on your finger. they ask you to lay on your left side and they put something in your mouth to keep it open..((it doesn't hurt)) then they spray this stuff into your throat to numb it. they ask you to swallow after like three sprays. then they give you the anesthesia, you are awake during the procedure but you will not remember a thing. after you come out of the anesthesia they want you to drink something...and they continue tracking your vital signs. as soon as they think you are stable, they will release you to go home. you will have a sore throat for a few days after but if you have throat lozenges then there is no pain.
it is completely safe.

An endoscopy should only be scheduled if you choke on food or drinks often or If you have a lot of acid reflux, or throwing up blood that looks like coffee grounds. Have you tried ulcer medicine? If you go through with the procedure and they find ulcers then you could have avoided an annoying procedure. If you had cancer the pain wouldn't stop for a week. If you get sick often and choke on food get the procedure. Good luck hope all goes well.

I am a nurse and deal with this procedure all the time, it does not hurt the dr. uses a small dose of medicine that puts you to sleep, all my patients don't remember the procedure at all. It does not hurt because they numb the back of your throat and you wont be able to eat for about 30 min-1 hour after til gag reflex returns it really wont hurt you to have it and the dr probably has a ligitamit reason for wanting to do this.

My dad has had one done and many residents at the nursing home I work at have had them done. They are safe and you don't feel much as they numb your espophogus when they do it. Why would you want avoid an important test if your doc thinks you need to have it done?

Yes, I've had one. It was VERY uncomfortable for me because I drove myself there, so I couldn't get put out with conscious sedation. Otherwise, I'd have been okay. Yes, it's safe. If your doctor says you need one, why would you want to avoid getting it?

It is safe. They give you drugs so you don't remember anything between, "Here we go," and "We're all done." If you need one, GET IT!! I have had 4, one upper and 3 lower.

I have had three of them done, and I am still alive. When you wake up your throat may be a little sore, but that will go away.
