They used to say Nemecheck would use #208, but on his car it said 08

They said Villenue would have #127, but his car said 27.

Why is this happening?

# Why does NASCAR (or NASCAR.com) use three digit numbers for some cars?

Sometimes different cars (Owners) have to share the same last two digits of a number. For instance, at the end of 2002, Rick Goodwin [Team Bristol] indicated that he would be renewing his Nextel Cup #54 because at the time, he had a full sponsorship from Toys "R" Us [which has since gone away]. After the renewal of his license this year, Travis Carter and his sponsorship [National Guard] wanted to use the Nextel Cup #54 as well. Since no two owners can occupy the same number, NASCAR licensed the #154 to Travis Carter with the caveat that should Rick Goodwin enter an event, they would have to find another number for Carter's car to use at that same event.
In an effort for membership and points to correctly assign championship car owner points, NASCAR has to distinguish between Rick Goodwin (#54) and Travis Carter (#154). Therefore, each owner continues to maintain throughout the season the car number they were originally licensed with. The Same goes for Marcis #71 and Lepage #171, if they enter the same race and both make it, Lepage needs to find a different number.(5-26-2003)

If a team has a right to a number such as 08 nobody else can use the o8 . Then you must use 208. If the owner of the 08 does not field a car bearing the 08 in a particular race then someone else CAN USE THE 08 if granted permission. Same goes for the #27 and other numbers!!!!!

No, i do no longer think of so. Take the 40 3 vehicle as an occasion. there have been a least a nil.5 a dozen drivers contained in the 40 3 vehicle as a results of fact the King retired, yet each person nevertheless pals the 40 3 with Richard Petty. as an occasion, i be attentive to this guy with a "40 3" tattoo, and no person comes as much as him and says "oh, you will possibly desire to be a Bobby Labonte fan..." each person is accepted with that the 40 3 is Richard Petty's quantity. i assume my factor is that having the three out on the music won't eliminate any of Earnhardt's accomplishments and what he ability to the sport. it style of feels like the sole time we pay attention approximately retiring numbers is whilst it includes the three vehicle, and that i think of that has extra to do along with his premature dying than the rest.

Yeah all the triple digit numbers are issued in lieu of the 2 digit numbers being used in a race. If no one is using 27 for instance then they can use it. The ones I don't like are the 01 through 09 numbers which can be used while the 1 - 9 cars are in the race.

Well I dont know if their is a rule about this or not but I think that the only time they use three digit numbers is in the Busch Series and if then even. I know that in other racing series that they sometimes use three digit numbers but not all the time. Also, the fact of the matter is NASCAR assigns the numbers to teams, and the #08 and the #27 werent in use, so why use three digit numbers when you dont have too?

I think they try to keep it only 2 digits. They might want a number but they probably said no.

They're only allowed to use 2 numbers.

I guess maybe if they put all the numbers then there wouldn't be enough space for the sponsor's.
