Basically they're both law enforcers. However, policemen and sheriffs differ in terms of jurisdiction. Meaning, policemen are usually assigned in urban areas while the sheriffs are for rural areas.

A sheriff was originally the highest executive official in a shire (shire reeve) in England. In the US this gradually became the chief law enforcement officer, especially in the West and South, and today is still an elected position. A policeman is a (presumably) professional law enforcement officer, generally with city jurisdiction, while a sheriff's office has county-wide jurisdiction, frequently only in non-incorporated parts of the county.

They are both peace officers, qualified by the state.
Police is typically a term used to describe city or municipality hired peace officers.
Sheriff's Deputies are the guys that run law enforcement in all of the unincorporated areas of a county. Sometimes small cities or townships don't have enough money to create their own police department so they pay extra to the county to use deputies for their law enforcement.
Deputies typically do all of the evictions too.
