Excellent.
As youngsters we need to find answers for ourselves, and adults with good intentions get in the way.
Once you learn a thing or two, you realize all the blah blah blah you're dad said is actually true. And hopefully then you appreciate the old man even more.

I'm guessing it was the hormones...well, when you were 17, some would suggest that parents are your enemies, and they would never know what you're doing, thinking, talking even if you do it, or say it in front of their face...because they're "parents" they're one whole generation apart from you...
But then you grew up, and you went to college, you get to experience more and more, just like your parents...and by that time, you've understood the perspective of your parents...
I have finally understood that recently when I had the biggest fight ever with my parents...then we reach an understanding, and I finally understand what they mean...
Hope that helps,

i think mark twain is saying it was he who changed, his father didn't learn everything in those three years.. he learned to understand and appreciate his father's intelligence.

Crap.
I know what Mr. Twain was trying to express, but in my case it is total and utter crap.

I've heard it many times before and it simply means that in four years you have matured enough to know that it was you who didn't know and not your father.

i find that amusing, because i just recently discovered how smart my father can be, although the small things still drive me nuts. i realised i was so full of myself a few years back.

That is so true. In my case, I didn't realize how smart my parents were until I was in my 30's
