Can you go into a gun store and just buy a stun gun?
without any license?
Do they put your name in a database?

"Stun guns" require no license to own or carry in most states. I doubt they are registered in any state.

A stun gun won't help you. You have to be standing next to the person to use it, and the amperage isn't as high as it is with a taser. You can stick a person about seven feet away with a taser, and it's not direct contact; it's two wires that stick the person and send electricity through them, and these will penetrare clothing too. People can grab the stun guns away from you, too, if they needed to. Just remember these are illegal in some places and if you shock someone with a heart problem, unless you can prove self-defense (i.e., they had a gun and were aiming for great bodily harm), you will be in a bit of trouble and travelling will be the least of your worries. I'd recommend Taser brand if you NEED one, but I still don't see a point, even if you have a fear of travelling. Wherever you're going shouldn't warrant more than pepper spray, and it'll probably get you a [checked] bag check by the TSA no matter what you bring (assuming you're flying).

Why would you want a stun gun? They are really useless for self defense. They are illegal to use, but not posses in most places, for anything else. Records aren't kept or required but the clerk will remember you because they don't sell many.
A Taser would be OK for self defense but a stun gun? You have to hole a stun guns probes against your assailant for about 3 full seconds for it to knock them down enough for you do get away. Look at a watch and see how long 3 seconds are.
Back in the early 80's stun guns were being marketed to law enforcement. I tried one on the street, they were useless. They are nothing but modified cattle prods so unless you are trying to get your attacker to go into a holding pen forget it.
Oh ya, if you are caught in a sexual assault and you have a stun gun on your person the charges can be upped even though you did not display or use the gun, it goes to intent, like a pedophile arranging to meet a 5 year old and carrying a doll and Vaseline.
