So that it best fits their lifestyle. Making owner and dog both happy!

There are many reasons why people may want a certain breed of dog. The person could be a stupid idiot like Paris Hilton who wants to show off to all of her cronies with a rat-sized dog, or you could be an elderly lady who wants a small dog such as a Shih Tzu or Pomeranian to cuddle on her lap by the fire while reading Pride and Prejudice. It all depends on who you are. Of course, other people don't care what kind they get, but everyone has preferences so the dog will fit their lifestyle. For instance, you wouldn't want a Great Dane if you had a small apartment, and you wouldn't want a Pit Bull if you had small children. Hope I've been some help. :D

Preference in size, appearance, common personality traits, comfort, lifestyle, accommodation restrictions... the list can go on.

I prefer large dogs known for loyalty and protection. That said, a German Shepherd is my first choice. If I can't get one, I'd consider a Doberman. They're both wonderful breeds, and I was raised around Dobies. With either one, I'd only buy from a reputable breeder, with a genetic background check and proper socialization.

I don't care for small dogs. They have a tendency to be yappy and biters (not all, I know, but most I've been around). The smallest dog I'd consider is the size of a Shiba Inu, but the personality would be the deciding factor.

I think there are different reasons for different people.

I have American Pit Bull Terriers because I have been around the breed since I was little and love the breed because of that. I couldn't imagine not having one around. I like their positive attributes and I'm dedicated enough to deal with the negatives. There are always drawbacks to any breed/mix breed. Some people will find them annoying, hard to live with, ect because that breed clashes with their lifestyle and personality.

The Cani Corso I like because I like large but athletic working breeds. Some find them scarey or intimidating but I think they look powerful, noble and regal. They are large, yet graceful and very gentle/loving for their size. They like the APBT love their people and bond really close to you. They are great guadians but yet they are not aggressive or out of control. Intelligent and alert.

The Boerboel (which I have owned in the past) I liked for similar reasons as the Cani Corso. However the BB is larger and while they still retain working and athletic ability they are not as graceful as the CC. They are also slower to mature on a mental/emmotional level. They take more time.

I like large, hairy dogs. I also like doing water work and draft work, and a hearty dog that can go backpacking and take walks in cold, snowy weather. And a breed that is not aggressive and is very "soft".

So I have Newfs.

Some people like to hunt and have a breed that does that. Other want fast running dogs.
People are more likely to keep the dog if it fits their lifestyle and they did not get it just because of the look of the dog.

Same reason some people want to drive a Vette and others a Volkswagon Bug.

I like lots of different breeds but I will always have a wirehair Dachshund. They just appeal to me the most. It's all a matter of taste or preference. If we all liked the same thing we would all drive the same cars, there would only be one type of pizza..... and our houses would all look alike.

For some they get a dog for fashion. Others such as myself, I wanted a companion (one who has a lifestyle that matched mine) and I've always wanted a dog. I'm the mother of a 3 1/2 month old yorkie. I wanted him because I heard they were smart dogs (which they are). He's the best thing ever! He also entertains me for hours.

I can only answer for me. I fell in love with chihuahuas about 30+ yr ago and in the last 30 yr of owning them, I have seen no reason to change. They are the best dog for me and my husband. They are the cutest, sweetest, smartest, most loving, loyal dog a person could ever want. I have owned many other dogs as well over the year, a lot were rescues. I love them too but have to admit, the chihuahuas have the most important place in my heart.

When I choose my puppy I did alot of research on temperment and how the dog would fit in with my family and lifestyle. I needed to have a dog that was good with children since I run a daycare.

I guess it has to do with the personality and lifestyle of the owner.
Personally, I like strong, independent and stable dogs, no matter their size (I've had bassett hounds and now I have german shepherds). Low maintenance is a must for me also.
I could not choose clinging or jumpy ones, as I myself am not very patient. And both my husband and I work all day, and sometimes all days in the week, so we like dogs that can tolerate beign by themselves withouth thrashing the house.
But I've seen people that get dogs because they are "cute".
Well, maybe they need cuteness in their lives!

I love all dogs but prefer small ones. I like to keep them in the house because I've had 2 dogs stolen before. Big dogs don't belong in the house.
