Heartworm medications are only available through a vet prescription. Hartz products are pretty much as worthless as the paper they are packaged in. Call your local shelter to see if there are any clinics in your area that offer the meds at low cost.

Heartguard Plus is the best product. You do have to have a heartworm test to get it and you have to get it from your vet. Where I work, for a dog your size it would be around 25.50 for a 6 month supply. Heartguard protects against intestinal parasites as well like hookworms and roundworms. It doesn't prevent tapeworm because those are caused from ingesting fleas. So make sure you use a good flea prevention like advantix or frontline to help with that. Some people do use the combination stuff like revolution or sentinal but we don't recommend those simply because we have found that it doesn't work for the fleas in alot of cases therefore we aren't sure how well it works for the heartworms. Also check prices in your area for these product and also online. Most vets will match the price if you find it cheaper online and can show proof of it.

You really need to take the puppy to the vet and buy something from the vet's office (or get an Rx from the vet to order from a pet supply place that sells these medications).
There are even several varieties that cover other parasites - just avoid the Revolution shot. It has caused some bad reactions and death in some dogs.
My 2 dogs are on Sentinel, and it's about $60 for a 6 month supply. My smaller dog is a pug, so your shih tzu would take the same or smaller dosage.

There are NO Hartz or other OTC products that prevent Heartworm. Hookworms are sold at Wal-Mart I am sure, but would SUCK!!!!!!!
You need to pay a vet and get a good wormer. Heartworm prevention can only be gotten through a vet and if they have tested negative through a blood test.

You can save a LOT of money by getting heartworm meds online from Canada. You don't need a prescription in Canada.
If you get these meds at the vet they are much more expensive and as the greedy people they are, they will charge you for a vet visit....meaning just for walking in the door.
Most meds can be purchased online for a lot less than anywhere else.
Good luck and congrats on the puppers!

Heart worm preventative can only be prescribed by a vet. You can take the scrip and order it from one of those cheaper places online though. I got an email this morning from someone that had been shopping around and found that http://www.vetshoponline.com/ was the cheapest place online to get it. The stuff you get in the store is just regular dewormer (other types of worms). It doesn't cover heartworms, which is deadly if your dog gets it and the treatment can be just as hard on them. Frontline seems to be the most popular one. It also covers fleas.

A dog has to be tested before you can put them on heartworm preventive. If you give it to them and by some chance they should already be infected, giving them the meds can kill them. I use Heartguard Plus and have used it for years and years. This is something you are going to have to use a vet for. Sorry. It is sooooo worth it. I have owned Shih Tzus for 23 years and they are the best dogs. Good luck!

you cannot purchase a heartworm product over the counter. Your dog will need to be tested at your vet and a product can be purchased there. As for deworming your vet will be able to prescribe a proper one for your dog. Some heartworm preventatives also have a monthly intestinal parasites dewormer in them.

Please buy the monthly prevention medicines from your vet office. I use Interceptors. It only costs about $25 a box for six pills.
