There is a ship named after Harry S Truman but he was a Democrat who was very different from those who now claim membership in what was once a pro-American party.

There have been aircraft carriers USS Franklin Roosevelt, USS John F. Kennedy, and USS Harry Truman. Destroyer USS Roosevelt is also named after FDR. There is also submarine USS Jimmy Carter.

The ironic name is for Harry Truman. Originally the carrier was to be named USS United States. Truman had an original carrier USS United States cancelled when he was president. Therefore, Harry S. Truman cancelled two carriers to be named USS United States.

I think she should bear the name USS Enterprise since the current Enterprise (CVN-65) will be decommissioned in 2013. USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the most decorated vessel in American history with 20 battle stars and USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Just my 2 cents.

Only Aircraft Carriers get named after presidents and as mentioned above, there are two of them.

Harry Truman pushed a law through congress on naming battleships after states. Because of Truman the Japanese signed their surrender on the Missouri. Truman was from Missouri and was the one who engineered that!

Pretty interesting when you look at some of the naming trivia.

Edit: Someone contacted me regarding the naming convention of battleships. Let me rephrase; Truman did not begin naming battleships after states, he introduced legislation regarding the order of the naming conventions to ensure the commissioning of the Battleship Missouri. Harry was from Missouri and his daughter christened the ship at her comissioning ceremony.

Well they were going to name a whole class of floating Whorehouses after Democrats, starting with the FDR, then the JFK, the LBJ, and rather than just use initials for the lead ship, they were going to call it "The Slick Willy", yes the pun is intended!
