I don't think he was teaching dependence on God as much as he was teaching to prioritize and put God first in your life, that way when you pursue and obtain other things you will be able to use them wisely...
31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

It because he wanted to make the point "All things come God". The old story of a rich man that fall on hard time and lost everything. He sat in his pastors office crying and the only thing I have left is God. The pastor said good you have all you need. God tells us if we put our trust in him he will supply all our needs. Not our wants but our needs. The birds don't go hungry. Because he take care of them and a child of God can expect the same.

I'll answer this because of TRUTH, not 'christian theology'...
The Kingdom of God, ie HEAVEN, is close to you, closer than you think(read Luke 10). Yahshua gave direction to not be concerned with WORLDLY things but with things of HEAVEN, of spirit, of His Kingdom. That is what matters, and is more important than what to eat, or whether your IPOD IS BROKEN. Seek first HIS KINGDOM, and your needs will be met.
All things come from the Father, and once you understand the Son, you will understand the Father as well.

Many people trust in their own power to supply their needs, when we should be trusting God. This does NOT mean we need to sit around and not work, other scriptures tell us to work. But so many people invest years in education to get a good paying job, or act unrighteously to get a good job, and so on.

This also is not to condemn college, as many might be called to a specific career or vocation which may require it.

The key is to seek God first and let Him lead you.

He was not advocateing not working for a living.
But he was saying do the best you can and then don't worry about it. He will help you to be feed and clothed.
Do not make the acquireing of riches the most important thing in your life.

He is telling us not to worry, because what we need, God will supply. Haven't you noticed you could be down to your last dollar and somehow, something comes through for you to make it?
