I'm hunting in PA. so I won't be taking any shots over a 100 yards most likely compared to the west.

the 32 special is a 30-30 with a .321 bullet & a1in 16'' twist instead of a .308 & 1 in 12'' twist.
it was introduced in1895 because the black powder that reloaders still used at that time quickly fouled the bore in 30-30s resulting in poor accuracy after a few rounds.
it has identical ballistics to the 30-30 and is not in the same class as the 30-06, although it will definetely get the job done in the woods. use what your most comfortable with.

Killed my first deer with a Model 1893 Marlin lever action carbine with a .32 Winchester Special. Hit the deer in the chest, just behind the shoulder and it dropped like a rock, kicked once then expired. Except for the caliber, the .32 Win special ballistics are very similar to the venerable .30-30 Winchester.

There is some thought as to why Winchester marketed the .32 Win Special, contemporary with the .30-30. Some have speculated that trappers and people out west who had been using Black Powder could reload for the .32 using black powder because the bore would be more forgiving of fouling than the .30-30 would be. The .30-30 was designed as a smokeless round from the ground up.

The ammunition is available for .32 Win special, but not normally carried in gun stores, except Gander Mountain up north and Cabela's may carry it routinely. Mail order wise I'd try Midway shooting supplies.

100 yards and under, the .32 would most likely be the best bet. 30-06 is really a mid-distance gun, with more than double the ft-lbs of energy, and almost 500 fps faster, the -06 would likely overpenetrate and not dispell all the energy of the bullet as well as the .32. Add in the smaller size of deer back east, and the -06 is just not a good choice unless shooting at 200 yards or better.

Just curious what part of PA?

There's nothing special about the 32 Special. It's a 30-30 with a slow twist and slightly larger bore. For woods hunting, it'll work nicely not because of the caliber but just because it's a handy rifle for snap shooting.

I think the .32 Special was a mistake. It is suppose to replicate the performance of the still popular 30-30.

The .32 special doesn't have enough power to cleanly kill a deer. You owe it to the animal to make sure that you make clean kills. Go back to your .30-06 and save the .32 special for plinking or target shooting. It's a neat gun but not a very good deer gun.
