Spackle has minimal shrinking. It also works well as a small hole filler. Drywall compound is for finishing wallboard. Drywall compound will shrink and is not for filling holes unless the are very small. Drywall compound can be used filling medium size holes if you use the correct type. DB90-DB45-DB30. The last two numbers are curing time. 90=90 minutes ect. This product will cure under water.

Drywall mud is much, much easier to sand but may shrink a bit more than spackle...do a skim coat first, wait 24 hours to dry, then final coat if necessary, wait again and finish sanding. Make sure to wear a respirator or mask when sanding as any fine particles getting in your lungs and sinuses will take forever to clear out---it turns to mud in your lungs. Try to use drywall mud that is formulated to have less airborne dust.

If you are trying to smooth over an entire wall you will use drywall mud, bot if it's just a little dent then you will use Spackle
