I know it's rocky in R&S, but someone just wrote to advise me to get rid of my "fan" section because of the stalkers and such. I did this.
Did I do the right thing?
Should I still accept people who want to be contacts?
Is accepting new fans and contacts really that dangerous?

Dangerous....Not really. It takes someone who can actually use a keyboard to track you down. IM messages are more dangerous.
If someone wants to track you down they do not need to be added to your fan list.
I have at least one cyber stalker "atheist" right now who uses various YA! names and was e-mailing 4-5 hate mails a day. He has a couple of identities on my fan list.
I don't worry about cyber stalkers any more than I worry about nuts on the road when I drive.

I had one fake Contact & Fan. They only wanted to be my contact so they could see my past Q&A and report them. I quickly realized who it was and removed them from my Contacts list.

I have had to do it from time to time
it does stop them a little ... but some find a way around finding your questions anyway

I have a bunch of contacts and haven't had any trouble with them.

I have not had any problems with it at all. As long as you are not sharing personal information you should be "safe".
