In the earliest days of the American involvement in the conflict most of the US military personnel went into the Greater Saigon area, primarily around Tan Son Nhut airport, but also Bien Hoa. Both of these were major air bases that also served other services.
Tan Son Nhut was my port of entry when I went to Vietnam in 1970 and when I left. This was in the III Corps area.
The Marine Corps and Air Force built a large base at Da Nang, also in the early 1960's, and numerous Army camps were built around the area as well, but that part of I Corps was primarily a Marine Corps operating area.
A large complex of air bases was also built in II Corps, centered at first on Nha Trang, but later expanding to Phan Rang, Tuy Hoa, and Cam Ranh Bay, which became one of the major logistical bases for South Vietnam. Dalat and Pleiku were also in II Corps.
IV Corps, which included the Mekong River delta, saw both Army and Navy forces in fairly large numbers. As I recall, Can Tho, Vung Tao and Soc Trang were among the larger US bases in that area.
My year was spent primarily at Nha Trang.

I arrived in Da Nang - the Marine Corps was in the northern part of the country.
