I was not trying to be disrespectful to Christians, just anticipating some of the answers I would get, get a grip ((((((((. I really didnt figure anyone outside of Wiccan/Pagans would bother to know the answer.

The question was posted hopefully to help others see that our sacred symbol was not one of evil but of beauty and worth. I hoped by the explaination of it others would see that there is nothing evil about it. Blessings to all.

The five elements (earth, air, fire, water, & spirit) are the common knowledge meaning of the five points. However, mystery traditions teach of other meanings behind the symbol. For those answers, you would need to initiate into a Tradition because that wisdom is not meant for the mundane.

There's more than one "correct" answer.
Some here will be familiar with the Pentacle of Iron/Iron Pentacle, or perhaps with the Pentacle of Pearl/Pearl Pentacle.
These are used as tool to awaken aspects:
Iron Pentacle (inner awakening):
Sex, Passion, Power, Self, Pride
Pearl Pentacle (outer awakening):
Love, Law, Knowledge, Power/Liberty, Wisdom
I'd like to add, however, that the EAFWS designations for the points are not just physical elements.
EARTH - Stability, Endurance
AIR - Intelligence, Communication, the Arts
FIRE - Courage, Physical mastery, Daring
WATER - Emotions, Intuition, Dreams
SPIRIT - Deity/the Divine/ the All that Is.
There's actually quite a bit more, but that's enough to, perhaps, get people to do a little research beyond the EAFWS designations.

Yes, they have given you to most well known answer. But the origin of the symbol is much older than the adaptation of the elements. It is an ancient symbol of life...humanity. Take a good look at the popular piece that Leonardo DaVinci did of man. Upright, with 5 points, the human form.
Spirit-Top & Center
Water- @ 3:00
Fire-@ 5:00
Earth-@ 7:00
Air-@9:00
Inverted- symbolizing the horned God (goat head). 2 horns, 2 ears & beard.

There are the "traditional" Elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit/Ether.
If it is with a SINGLE point up it can represent Spirit "transcending" matter and if it has TWO points up it can represent Spirit "descending into" matter.
Neither one is "Evil" and in fact the "inverted" form is sometimes used as a symbol for the second degree of Wiccan initiation.
In Hellenic Tradition it is sometimes also referred to as a Pentalpha

Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Spirit of course, all connected and balanced and contained by the circle.
Did you also know that if one were to trace the path of Venus around the sky in a celestial sphere, it makes a nearly perfect pentagram?
Also that the varying lengths of the different lines in a pentagram have the Golden Ratio? (wikipedia shows this very well)
Very cool symbol IMO.

There are several true answers to this question, and I won't repeat the ones that have gone before me.
In ritual magic, invocation for summoning in rituals of light...
They are Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Michael and Lucifer, the Angels of the Gates.
oh, and that thing about confinement within, that is not the only way it can work. In the harmonic practices which predate the stuff Crowley throws out...those resonances are not used to bind, but to REACH OUT in harmony along the webs of souls.
Not for Dominion, Not for Coercion, Not for Gain.
But for balance.
It's high time some of this stuff came out from the covers it's been kept under.
Blessings.

In traditional Wicca, only 4 of the points stand for elements.
They also stand for:
The five types of gods.
The five families
The five points of Wiccan belief
The five states of matter
The five types of being
The five great elders
The five species of intelligent life on earth
and a bunch more, depending on which tradition of Wicca you're speaking of.

It's held many meaning over time. The Christian actually used themselves at one time to symbolize the five wounds of Christ. (Check your history before you TD)
Currently it is the five elements I believe. Also one point up is the goddess and two points up is the god is some trads.
At one time it was a symbol of truth I think?
