I would like to run a 5K in a year. I'm not a runner and I need to know what would be a good time goal would be for finishing. I'm not looking to take first place...just a decent showing for a first timer. Any suggestions, ideas, tips, help would be apperciated.

I apologize for the lack of information. The 5K will be in one year. I am not very athletic and haven't ever ran any kind of race before. I wanted to do something that I knew would be a challenge for me.

YOU ARE SO WISE TO START EARLY. You'll have plenty of time to gauge your performance between now and race day. The thing you should concentrate on now is establishing a base, learning good habits, and staying injury-free. Read every book you can on running, and you'll get lots of ideas.

Don't worry about what other runners are doing, your goal is to get a base, and then train for the 5 k at the right time.

Good Luck

Running a 4 minute mile would only be a few seconds slower than the world record. Also, you can't walk 7-8 minutes per mile. At that point, you are running at an above-average pace. Where did you get these goals from? If you want to become a very fast runner, you need to first decide what distances you want to be fast at. Being fast at 1 mile is different than being fast at 26.2 miles. Pick a goal distance, then pick a goal pace that fits.

It is certainly within the realm of possibilities. But, as the first person stated, you need to provide more information about your physical fitness. I ran one 5k race in my entire life (many, many moon ago) and finished about a 8.5 minute per mile clip. I had about 3 weeks of running for soccer practice to help get me into a little running shape, but far from good.

That said, if you are in reasonably good shape (perhaps not perfectly fit but not without much excessive body weight), with about a month of preparation, you should be able to reach the stated goal.

Five kilometers is roughly 3 miles. Perhaps train for a half mile the first week and increase and speed and distance each week. Start slowly. You muscles will be sore the first few times running.

Go for it. You can do it.

Your age would obviously help. But I ran my first official 5K in my late 40's, and I think I was around 27 minutes. I had run before (leisurely jogs in the neighborhood to stay in shape) and played basketball, but had never been in a race. So I would guess if you are working out now, you probably could at least do 8:30 miles.

I ran in a 5k race here in Las Vegas. I came like 70th out of 2000, I consider that pretty good. I run miles in about 6:30. and my time was about 30 minutes. so you should go for about 40 or something. If you practice every day you will be at a good position. I got kinda lazy so I didnt practice that good for that race.

We need to more to give you any idea.
When is this 5k? If it isn't any time soon, try running a practice 5k. If you are capable of finishing it, try making goal from that time.

No, not at all. If you are on the XC team and practice every day you should be in good shape.
