The type of blade she carried was commonly called by two names, either nodachi, or shinobigatana. The terminology would vary depending on whom you'd ask, but they are in essence the same sword.
All a nodachi is, is a shorter sword with the same blade construction and curvature of a standard daito. The blade is smaller, as would be the tsuka (handle) itself (depending on construction)....they had many variations on a common theme, depending on how the tool was to be used.

A typical male Japanese Samurai in the old days carried two swords, One long and one short. The longer one was called a Katana while the shorter one was called a Wakizashi. Both swords which comprise a whole set is called a Daisho. The long sword depending on the mounting is called an Uchigatana when tucked into a belt with the sharp blade facing up and is called a Tachi when hung from a belt with blade facing down. During the Tokugawa era, all swords were strictly regulated and samurai were expected to follow specific regulation lengths and fittings for their swords, this was so in case of rebellion, no rebel samurai would have a sword longer than a government soldier's sword thus giving him an advantage. Swords with large square tsubas or hilt guard which could be used as stepping boards to climb up security walls were also banned and tsuba sizes were regulated as well. Thus most of the longer Tachi were shortened to meet the specific length required of samurai swords and converted to uchigatana mountings. The short sword is usually used by male samurai to commit sepukku or ritual suicide to save their honor and since only samurai were allowed to redeem themselves from public shame thru seppuku, the act of carrying a wakizashi shows one's status as a samurai. Any commoner caught carrying two swords were executed for impersonating a samurai. Female samurai(yes women born from a Samurai family are considered samurai too) were not expected to fight with swords so they usually carry the Tanto instead. The Tanto is a small utility knife which is mostly used by female samurai for protection and to commit seppuku(ritual suicide) to protect their honor, although male samurai also used the tanto for utility purposes and sometimes pair it with the katana in his belt.

Errr....correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a Nodachi a large two handed anti-cavalry sword resembling a giant katana about six feet long and carried over one's shoulder?
