a = + or - 3 (3 squared = 9)
b = + or - 8 (8 squared = 64)

-3 +-8 = -11
3+ 8 = 11
- 3 + 8 = 5
3+ - 8 = -5

f) all of the above
sorry, if this is not a trick question, i think you copied it wrong

None, actually.
a^2 = 9
a = 3 or (-3)
b^2 = 64
b = 8 or (-8)

3 + 8 = 11
3 + (-8) = (-5)
(-3) + 8 = 5
(-3) + (-8) = (-11)

The only numbers that a + b could equal would be (-11), (-5), 5, and 11.

in (a + b)

a can either be 3 or -3 and
b can either be 8 or -8

so none of them can the value of (a + b)

as when:-
a is -3 and b is -8 (a +b) = -11
a is -3 and b is +8 (a + b) = 5
a is +3 and b is -8 (a + b) = -5
a is +3 and b is +8 (a +b) = 11

a^2=9 --> a is either +3 or -3
b^2=64 --> b is either +8 or -8
so a+b can be:
11,-5,5 or -11 !

so i think the answer of your question is any of the answers can not be the value of a+b !

maybe it is kind of a tricky question. does it state on the question that only one choice is correct?..if it didn't state that then just pick any of them..coz all of them can;t be a+b..

and tell us the answer when you know it:)

It's none of them.
a sqared = 9
a = 3 or -3
b squared = 64
b = 8 or -8
a+b=?
3+8=11 / -3+8=5 / 3+-8=-5 / -3_-8=-11

well a is equal to 3 and b is equal to 8

squaring a negative number or positive will make it positive no matter what....remember to negatives cancel out each other

so.....3+8 is equal to 11

I don't see how any of these choices can fit here!
