i think absoulelty NOT. i think you SHOULD be able too!!! i speaks spanish even though i have nothing in my blood that is spanish. what does "United States" mean to you? we are united states that means that we are united and we can speak, act, use the cultures we want. yes the dominate language is english but if you look around to other countries many of their population knows more than just ONE language. some americans are too lazy to learn it. we are united! we are not "goody two shoes" in the north america. i think america thinks they are pretty good, self centered and thinks that no other countries can do this, this, or this and we can do this, this and this and we are still the best. i think that is a bunch of bull****!!! we are NOT the best, we are united as one! now days some people think that im so good because of this and your not. etc. anyhow, what do you think?

Who's saying anything about making it illegal? That's not even possible. You're completely overreacting.

I definitely don't think it should be "illegal" but it shouldn't be a requirement either. If you come to a foreign country, you can't expect their citizens to cater to you. It doesn't work that way, nor should it.

Answer me this: Why is it that American tourists are constantly lampooned for supposedly expecting Europeans to speak English, but nobody bats an eye when Central/South Americans who permanantly move to the US expect everyone here to speak Spanish? Do you honestly not see an incongruence there?

No language should be illegal in the US or in any other country.

However, living in the US I do think that everyone should learn the English language.

If I moved to another country, the first thing I would do is learn the language so that I could communicate properly with people that are natives of the country.

I agree that most Americans only know English, myself included, whereas people from other cultures seem to be multi-lingual. I'm just not sure what other language I would like to learn first.

No, it should not be "illegal" to speak Spanish, but I believe that English should be the "official" language - that is, all documents should be written in English only. If you want to use our services, learn English. That doesn't mean you should stop speaking Spanish. Generations of immigrants from Europe and the Far East gladly learned the language when they came here, and they didn't demand that we (Americans) learn to speak their language. That is what the "melting pot" is all about. Different colors, one language.

There are Spaniards that live in Latin America. Just like you are Italian and live in America. Are you no longer Italian now that you live here? @ OA - I understand your frustration, seeing as how it often irks me when people hear someone speaking Spanish and assume they are "Spanish" (which itself is a blanket term amongst idiots here to identify anyone who lives south of the United States). I'm just saying, there are a good number of Latin Americans of PURE SPANISH descent that you are overlooking. But yeah, I'm aware that most Americans are totally ignorant of the fact that Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity, not race. Both of those terms should just be eliminated altogether in my eyes, seeing as how they just confuse people. There should just be a quick lecture on the differences between nationality, race, and ethnicity for people to better understand it. I saw someone ask whether Ines Sainz was white, Mexican, or Hispanic. I proceeded to explain that she was ALL THREE, and that they are NOT mutually exclusive terms. She is Caucasian racially (more specifically, white), Hispanic (ethnicity), and Mexican (nationality).

Speaking Spanish is fine. Push 1 for English is going to far. English is our native language. Spanish is a second language

I think we should speak whatever the hell we want to, as long as we remember that the official language is English, and we should speak English.

I agree with you.... in any case, I think that no language and no religion can be banned from any country, nor should they.... unless a country lives under the rule of a dictator and their basic freedoms are taken away from them, this could not happen in any normal and civilized country...!!!!

I agree with you! I heard two girls speaking Italian today and a guy at school said "this is America, not Italy" and I stepped in and said "yeah, there also isn't an official language, so butt out". God people like that annoy me!
